Definition Comfort devices are articles which would add to the Comfort of the patient when used, by relieving discomfort and helping to maintain correct posture.
Purpose To relieve discomfort. To provide and maintain correct body alignment. To immobilize a body part. To prevent falls and accidents
Common devices 1. Pillows Uses: Used to support body parts Relieves pain on abdominal muscles Used in positioning patients
2.Footboard A flat panel or board made of plastic or wood which is placed perpendicular to the mattress and parallel to the touching the plantar surface of the patient’s feet Uses: Used to prevent plantar flexion of feet.
3.Posey foot guard Made of foam structures. Uses: Used to maintain patient’s feet in a dorsiflexed position and prevent foot drop.
4.Sandbags These are sand filled bags which are available in various sizes. Uses Used for application of pressure in case of bleeding. Used to provide support and shape to body contours and maintains specific body alignment
5.Cardiac table Uses: Used for patient to lean forward. Used as a book support to read or write or as a table to take food in bed itself Used in positioning patients who are to undergo some diagnostic procedures like thoracentesis
6. Bed blocks Made up of wood or metal, used to raise the head or foot end of the bed Uses used to provide trendelenburg position for patients: Following spinal anesthesia For preventing shock For arresting hemorrhage For retaining fluids in retention enema
