COMMERCIAL FORESTRY

The Rise of Commercial Forestry British needed forest to build ships and railways. They were worried about the reckless felling of trees by local traders. British invited a German expert, Dietrich Brandis and made him the first IG of Forests in India. Rules about the use of Forest Resources.

FIRST FOREST INSPECTORS DIETRICH BRANDIS

Brandis Established The Indian Forest Service in 1864. Indian Forest Act in 1865. Imperial Forest Research Institute was set up at Dehradoon in 1906. Started in S cientific Forestry.

INDIAN FOREST ACT AMENDMENT First Amendment in 1878. Second Amendment in 1927. These two amendment was started by Dietrich Brandis .

First Amendment 1878 This amendment was divided into forest in three parts:

RESERVED FOREST The best forests were called reserved forests. Villagers were not allowed to take anything from these forests.

PROTECTED FOREST villagers were allowed to take wood for house building or fuel. Village Forest Villagers were allowed to takes wood for house building or fuel.

SHIFTING CULTIVATION

PLANTATIONS Large areas of natural forests were also cleared to make way for Tea, Coffee, and Rubber Plantations to meet Europe’s growing need for these for commodities. Colonial Government took over the forest and gave vast areas to European planters at cheap rates.
