Lesson IV Communication Cues: Focus on Verbal and Non-Verbal Symbols

Verbal Communication

Verbal Symbols Refer to the use of speaker language (Antonio, et.al., p.30)

When you really communicate with others there are times when the messages sent or received are easily understood by the speaker or the listener.

There are also times when they are misunderstood, Why does this Happen? When is Verbal Message sent successfully or a failure?

TYPES OF MEANING

Madrunio Cited Different types of meaning based on the distinctive signals that indicate how the words used and sentences formed differ in meaning from the other words and sentences in the language.

Phenomenological Meanings

Phenomenological Meaning This signals for this type of meaning are distinctive sounds that are put together to form a meaningful item. Pat Bat Bear Fear

Semantic Meanings

Semantic Meanings The distinctive signal lies not in the sound itself, because there are some words that have the same sound, but have different spellings and meanings. (Homonyms)

Semantic Meanings Homonyms - is a word that is said or spelled the same way as another word but has a different meaning. Ex. Write Right Sun Son Meet Meat

Semantic Meanings There are some words that have the same spelling, but are pronounced differently because they certain sounds and are assigned different meanings (Heteronyms)

Semantic Meanings Heteronyms - are words that are spelled identically but have different meanings when pronounced differently. Ex. Lead (guide) Lead (Metal)

Heteronyms Ex. Close the doors, as the storm is getting close . I will resume my job search, once I will update the resume. would like to present the birthday present that I bought for you .

Semantic Meanings It also has to do with meaning of compound words that is, two or three words put together to form another term which combines the meaning of words that compose it.

Syntactic Meanings

Syntactic Meanings This refers to your knowledge of grammatical rules

Syntactic Meanings Ex. the phone is ringing I shall phone you later

Pragmatic Meanings

Pragmatic Meanings This considers not just the words, but also the context of the situation and the relationship of the communicators to arrive at the meaning of the utterance.

Pragmatic Meanings Ex. Teacher (Talking to the class) “Class, there are pieces of paper on the floor”.

Pragmatic Meanings Another problem to contend where lexical meaning is concerned is that words do not have several meanings depending on the context on situation.

Pragmatic Meanings They may also have specialized meanings depending on the field or work where they are used.

Pragmatic Meanings Ex. The word RING Babes … I’m giving this ring . Give me a ring tonight so we can discuss your proposal. Ring the correct word that should be used in each sentence.

Non - Verbal Communication Focus on the “Hidden Language . ”

Non – Verbal Communication Is the transfer of meaningful information from one person to another by means of other written or spoken. (Citing Vaughan and Hugg , 1988)

Non – Verbal Communication Consists of relaying message units to augment, contradict or replace verbal communication. (Citing Joesting , 1998)

Non – Verbal Communication Roles of non-verbal communication. Communication can reflect their emotions through their non verbal cues/actions in public.

Categories of NVC

1. Sign Language Words and numbers which are transmitted as message through the rice of gesture.

2. Object Language Represents material objects like clothes, shoes, tools or art object.

3. Action Language Refers to all movement which are not frequently used as signals on cues (Ex. Walking)

Types of Non-verbal Communication

1. Time Time related and is a fun interpersonal communication, it speaks. (ex. Punctuality)

2. Proxemics This is the use of space when people communicate in relation with other people.

2. Proxemics Kinds of Space: Intimate Space (1 - 1.5ft) Personal Space (1 – 2.5ft) Public Space (12ft and extend as far as auditorium)

3 . Territoriality Associated with graphic location, where people in relation to one another.

4. Body Movement & Gestures Body language including hand signals which connate meanings.

5 . Posture The position or the bearing of the body; involuntary in nature but communicates important signals maybe friendly or hostile

6. Facial Expression Change in eyes, mouth, etc. which can send communication message to other speaker.

7. Eye movements it helps immensely in communicating others and enhances the overall process of communication.

8. Artifacts object or things in contract that may serve as non-verbal stimuli. (ex. Perfume, clothe, bag, shoes, wristwatch & eyeglasses.)

10. Paralanguage Refers to how something is said and not what is said.

11. Tactile Communication One of the first modes of communication of the human being. (ex. Hugs or holding hands.)
