COMMUNICATION
PRINCIPLES
(conflict & dialogue)

CONFLICT
its meaning and related concepts
2
1

CONFLICT
▰Conflict has been defined as "an
expressed struggle between
interdependent parties who perceive
incompatible goals, scarce resources,
and interference."
3

CONFLICT MANAGEMENT
▰Conflict management is the
communication behavior a person
employs based on his or her analysis
of a conflict situation.
4

CONFLICT MANAGEMENT
▰Conflict management involves
alternative ways of dealing with
conflict, including resolution or
avoiding it altogether.
5

CONFLICT MANAGEMENT
▰Effective conflict management occurs
when our communication behavior
produces mutual understanding and an
outcome that is agreeable to everyone
concerned.
6

CONFLICT RESOLUTION
▰It refers to only one alternative in
which parties solve a problem or issue
and expect it not to arise again.
7

4 EFFECTIVE WAYS TO
HANDLE CONFLICT WITH
BETTER COMMUNICATION
8
2

4 EFFECTIVE WAYS TO HANDLE CONFLICT
WITH BETTER COMMUNICATION
Cultivate genuine compassion.
▰Extend empathy toward the other
person(s) and the case they present.
Find an appreciation for their humanity
and perspective.
9

4 EFFECTIVE WAYS TO HANDLE CONFLICT
WITH BETTER COMMUNICATION
Be inquisitive.
▰Ask open questions to formulate true
and clear comprehension. Strive to
learn not just the “what”but also the
“why”and the “how.”
10

4 EFFECTIVE WAYS TO HANDLE CONFLICT
WITH BETTER COMMUNICATION
Listen carefully to understand (not to respond).
▰We frequently interrupt people or tune them
out to think ahead about our response.
Eliminate that habit; rather, listen intently to
gain a better understanding. Then, pause
before you offer a response or follow up with
an additional question.
11

4 EFFECTIVE WAYS TO HANDLE CONFLICT
WITH BETTER COMMUNICATION
Speak respectfully.
▰Be wary of language that is condescending or
dismissive. Often, “corporate speak”can feel
insincere or detached. Choose your words
carefully and with intent to deliver an
authentic response that honors all sides..
12

DIALOGUE
13
3

DIALOGUE
▰It is “a communicative process in
which people with different
perspectives seek understanding.”
14

DIALOGUE
▰Dialogue is a communication tool that
allows people to understand other
viewpoints without pitting themselves
against different perspectives.
▰In dialogue, there is no defending of
opinions, and no counterpoints.
Instead, you let someone talk and
present their viewpoint.
15

DIALOGUE
▰To be in dialogue means that
participants are not only engaging
each other in light of their different
views, but they are also striving to
achieve a degree of mutual
understanding.
16

DISCUSSION vs. DIALOGUE
▰In discussion, people interact with a goal of
articulating their diverse views. While there
is value in interacting with others in this way,
discussion demands little from participants
in terms of building understanding.
17

DISCUSSION vs. DIALOGUE
▰Participants in dialogue make an active effort
to understand the perspective that the other
person has shared.
▰Dialogue is “a process of interaction through
which human beings listen to each other
deeply enough to be changed by what they
learn”("Principles of Oral Communication,"
2018, p. 323).
18

THE 5 CORE SKILLS
OF DIALOGUE
19

THE 5 CORE SKILLS OF DIALOGUE

communicating across cultures by
sharing personal stories, values, and
perspectives and respecting differing or
challenging views of others.
20

THE 5 CORE SKILLS OF DIALOGUE

▰The ability to listen to others, understand
what they are saying, and show empathy
and recognition.
21

THE 5 CORE SKILLS OF DIALOGUE

▰The ability to evaluate, analyze and
interpret information about self, others,
and the world.
22

understanding, inclusion of all voices, and
to move the dialogue forward.
23

THE 5 CORE SKILLS OF DIALOGUE
