Communication, principles, factors and models of communication Lecturer : Muhammad Maibeni Objectives: At the end of the lecture, Student should be able to Define the term communication process State reasons for communication Explain the meaning of intra-personal, inter personal and mass communication Explain four (4) factors that affect communication List five (5) principles of effective communication Describe two (2) of the models of communication.
Without communication, the world does not come closer as much as we can understand. When communication happens between two or more persons it takes some steps to complete the communication. To communicate one needs communicator (source), a message, channel and receiver. The process of message sending steps from communicator to receiver are called communication process.
To communicate effectively, the source (communicator) designed a message, the receiver when he received the message there is an effective communication. The receiver respond to the source (communicator) resulting in a feedback. This series or process is called communication process. Communication process Noise Feedback Sender ⇒ Encoding ⇒ Media ⇒ Decoding ⇒ Receiver
Harold Lass Swell defines the process of communication through the following questions. Who says? It means the sender or communicator? What is said? It stated about the intended message, idea or information. Which way? It described the media or channel of communication used to send the message. To whom? It speaks about the media or listener. With what effect? It means the response or feedback from the sender.
In conclusion – communication is a process or series of some steps tasks or cyclical interaction which starts from a communicator to a receiver and the receiver provides feedback to the sender. There might be noise in the process. Effective communication cycle Encode Feedback Decode Message Send Interpret
Why do teachers communicate? We communicate with others so that we can learn more about ourselves. By so doing we are able to discover who we really are. We communicate everyday to persuade some one to do something for us. Communication help us to have the opportunity to learn about the world around us. Communication is done between people for the purpose of sharing experiences, knowledge, fears, apprehensive, and intensions with others.
5) Man communicate to have, fun, play, relax from the rigors of others kinds of communication. 6) As pre-service and in-service teachers we communicate so that we change or modify how others act or behave on a regular basis. Teachers communicate so that they can have control of the learners. 7) Communication helps to develop peoples, teachers, personnel in management organizations, the industrialist, the military regime, traders and social workers, imams, church ministers, all know the important role communication can play in developing people.
Intra-personal scope of communication. You get information from the books you read about other people. How they think, feel, value, react, imagine, and dream, how they manage information etc. Information is without the brain, you can only see this in the outward expression of your behavior.
Inter-personal scope of communication It is the interaction between people and their environment including friends, family, children and co-workers etc. Mass communication Information from radio, television, newspapers, periodicals, journals or magazines – all have effect on people.
Factors Affecting Communication Culture Background – We all know that meaning are in people and not in a message. When communicating the language, symbol and signs that are understood by the receiver should be used. Educational background aids understanding. The level of knowledge of the learners should be considered for appropriate planning when teaching the learners. Religion: Similar religious background make easy communication with other members of the sect. Psychological/physiological state of the encoder and the decoder – Discussion with people in the same level of physiological and psychological state of readiness leads to effective communication. Emotion: Emotional breakdown can lead to breakdown in communication.
Principles of Effective Communication Think, clarify your ideas, systematically, analyze the problem or the ideas to be communicated. Define your objective(s) use instructional objectives in measurable behavioral terms. Use all available facilities to get your message across. Meanings and intents are conveyed by more than one word. Be sensitive to the receiver. Is he ready, etc. are you on the same wavelength?
e) Voice tone, expressions and receptiveness affect others. e.g. overdressed teacher create stimulus for poor learning. f) Interest of receivers (decoder) should be of high premium. If teacher talk about what students are interested on, communication becomes effective. g) Avoid anything that create barrier to effective communication. e.g. noise, irrelevant facts, ambiguity of works, redundant sentences etc. h) Reinforce good behaviors by giving immediate feedback.
Models of Communication 1.Shannon Weavers Model: In this model some level of noise is tolerated at the different stages of communication. Improved Model of Shannon and Weavers Communication System Feedback Information Transmitter Receiver Destination Source Message Signal Received signal Noise Sender Code Message Channel Gate keeper Frame refrence Receiver Noise

Formative Assessment What are the five (5) reasons why we should communicate. What are the five (5) principles of effective communication? Define the following Encoder Decoder Message Noise level is a factor in effective communication. Discuss. How would you explain the term communication to be understood by your students.
