COMMUNICATION STYLES Communication has its own different styles which we most often use in our daily interactions with friends, family and colleagues. Communication must be assertive i.e. clearly express your thoughts and feelings through open, honest and direct communication. 2

There are various styles of communication, communication must be assertive i.e. clearly express your thoughts and feelings through open, honest and direct communication. Every person communicates with different styles, which include- Assertive Aggressive Passive aggressive Submissive Manipulative 4
Assertive Style: It is the most effective style of communication. It is full of self confidence. In this, we know our limits and don’t allow ourselves to be pushed beyond them but is least in use. It includes behavioral characteristics, non-verbal behaviors, language etc. which are full of confidence and positively. Aggressive Style: it is an ineffective communication style as the content of the message may get lost because people are too busy reacting to the way it was delivered. This style is full of negative thoughts and is useless because it is at the expensive of someone else. Passive-Aggressive Style: This type is a combination of two different moods. In this people appear passive or calm on the surface but are actually acting on their feelings and anger is indirect or behind the stage ways. These types of people are powerless and express their feelings by understanding the real situations/objects. DIFFERENT STYLES OF COMMUNICATION 5

Submissive Style: This style is about pleasing other people and conflict. In this person give priorities to other people’s needs and thinks other people have more rights and more to contribute. These people are frustrated, guilty, they even do not know what they want. Manipulative Style: This style is full of calculations and manipulations. These communicators are skilled at controlling others to their own advantage. Their spoken words hide an underlying message of which the other person may totally unaware. 7
COMMUNICATION STYLE MATRIX There are different models that describe the ways in which we communicate. Different models also known as matrix of communication style. The matrix can be confusing at first but it’s a very useful tool once we understand how it works. Once we install in our mind a mental image of the matrix, we can use it to identify nother person’s communication style. The matrix propose by him shows that there are two different dimensions in communication styles. One is level of expressiveness and the level of assertiveness. 8
There are different models that describe the ways in which we communicate. Different models. also called as matrix of communication styles, are used to indentify another person’s communication style.- Director, Expresser ,Thinker and Harmonizer . if we divide the matrix into equal quadrants, then each quadrant describes primary styles of the individual. Each quadrant represents a different communication style. People can fall anywhere in the quadrant, become more uniform over one style and the other as they move further from the center. Our “ primary style ” is the one we’re most comfortable with. But we also have a backup style.Typically, this second style is dictated by our situation — the demands of our particular job if at work, the demands of domestic life if at home. We refer to the backup style as our “ secondary style .” 9

Direct Style: Low Expressiveness + High Assertiveness Spirited Style: High Expressiveness + High Assertiveness Considerate: High Expressiveness + Low Assertiveness Different communication styles are explained as follows: 12
Systemic Communication Style: Systemic communication focus on facts and details not on opinions and possibilities. They are slow in action as they start analyzing the situation and construct a logical, well thought-out response. They like to focus on facts and details rather than opinions and possibilities. Direct Communication Style: These people tell others what to do and don’t care for what others think should be done. These people work hard and fast will break few distractions. People are high assertive and less expressive. They tell others and do not listen others. They are attempting to focus on results rather than emotions. These type of people won’t always stop to listen to others. 13
Spirited Communication Style: People having this type of style are very interested in actual they are dreamers, inventors and the innovators in the group . Their communication is full of good one great ideas. People are high assertive and high expressiveness. They can provide guidelines to others by their thoughts and ideas and talk . Considerate Communication Style: These people are very concerned about the feelings of others. They always encourage others to do good things. They always focus on peace and liked by others. People with this style are very concerned about feelings of others . They like to work with others , help others and connect to other personal level. They give everyone chance to speak 14
