Building an Infrastructure for
CommunityEngaged Research
at UC Merced

What is Community Engaged Research?

Community Engaged Research (CEnR) is a method that aims to
transform research into something that goes beyond the sole benefit
of academia.

Data from CEnR can be applied to real world problems and shifts
from past traditions of generating valuable knowledge that is
inaccessible to the public.

Engagement establishes a two-way relationship in which both
entities are equally involved and benefit in some way. It allows
community members to be a part of how research is conducted &
presented.

Community partners and researchers must be flexible in their goals in order to
obtain a result that is mutually productive.

CEnR at UC Merced
●UC Merced was established with the principles of
CEnR in mind and since 2009 has shown an
interest in sustaining it on campus.

●In 2013 the Resource Center for Community
Engaged Scholarship (ReCCES) was established in
response to the Chancellor’s Task Force on
Community Engaged Scholarship.

●ReCCES hosts the annual Reception
for Community Engaged research to
showcase research being done by
graduate students within the
greater Merced community.

●In collaboration with the
Community Engagement Center,
ReCCES has worked to establish a
listserv for faculty to connect with
each other.
Sustaining CEnR At UC Merced

●In 2018 the Henry Luce Foundation funded a
$280,000 grant for graduates to conduct CEnR
projects.
○Along with research, the grant funds
workshops, seminars, and internships.
●UROC programs offer undergraduates the
opportunity to conduct research with faculty.
○Many UROC-H projects have been
concerned with the greater Merced regions
