COMMUNITY IDENTIFICATION
Community Identification Community identification is a systematic process of collecting various information regarding a community for assessing health status of community members and various factors affecting the health status .
Advantages of Community identification It is helpful in obtaining informations regarding structure of community , health status of people , their health needs and problems and factors affecting health status. It provide an opportunity to the nurse to communicate with the community members which improves their interpersonal and working relationship. It encourages active community participation in planning ,implementation and evaluation of health services.
Information collected during community identification During community identification mainly following information’s are collected by the community health nurse- Geographical characteristics Population related information Information’s regarding special risky groups Vital events Environmental characteristics Physical environment Social environment Availability of resources
Geographical characteristics These include- Name of the area Location Size Boundaries of the area Main landmarks Roads, streets, main building in the area To prepare map of the area
Population related information These includes- Total population Composition of the population Population density No of total families Average size of the families Classification of the population based on age Sex ratio Caste wise classification of the population Classification on the basis of economic status etc
Information regarding special risky groups It includes information regarding- Infants (0-1 year old children) Toddler (1-3 year old children) Old person People having underweight or over weight Smoke Alcohal users Drug abusers Handicapped person Pregnant women
Vital events It includes to obtain information regarding following vital events of the area- Birth Rate Death rate Infant Mortality rate(IMR) Maternal mortality rate(MMR) Perinatal Mortality Rate Expectation of life
