ABSTRACT

Organic farming can be defined as an agricultural process that uses biological fertilizers and pest
control acquired from animal or plant waste. Organic farming was actually initiated as an answer to
the environmental sufferings caused by the use of chemical pesticides and synthetic fertilizers. In
other words, organic farming is a new system of farming or agriculture that repairs, maintains, and
improves the ecological balance. System of farming that uses organic inputs like green manures,
cow dung, etc., for cultivation. Excessive use of chemical fertilisers reduces the fertility of soil,
excessive use of chemicals has led to soil, water, and air pollution, to conserve ecosystem, to
promote sustainable development, inexpensive farming, increased demand of organic products due
to safety of food and so on are the need and of organic farming. Environment-friendly, promotes
sustainable development, healthy and tasty food, inexpensive process, It uses organic inputs,
generates income, generates income through exports, source of employment, organic farming is
more labour intensive, it generates more employment are the benefits of organic farming. Lack of
Fertile Land, reduced Yields, susceptible to Pest Attacks, high Input Costs, shortage of Supply of
Organic Inputs, hindrance in Distribution, lack of transportation and proper market facilities, lack
of irrigation facilities and so on are the problems in organic farming.

CHAPTER 1: EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Godawari in actual, is believed to be a holy place holding religious importance since early long time.
This is a famous pilgrimage spot in far-west. The spot has been situated on the side of holy Godawari
river, which is the great faith the point of Hindu people.
The district comprises two municipalities (Tikapur and Dhangarhi) and 42 VDCs. The altitude of
the district varies from 109 m asl to 1 957 m and the climate is tropical to subtropical. Two agro-
ecological zones are differentiated on the basis of altitude: (a) Chure and (b) the Terai region.

Kailali District isa part of Sudurpashchim Pradesh in Terai plain is one of the 77 districts of Nepal.
The district, with Dhangadhi as its district headquarters, covers an area of 3,235 square kilometers
(1,249 sq mi) and has a population (2011 census) of 775,709 (616,697 in 2001 census).

First day we went to our village Olani for surveying about organic farming and its benefits. We
learnt that the process of organic farming and its importance .On second day we gathered
information about requirement about organic farming. By this day we came to know that it is difficult
to fulfill requirements in rural areas for organic farming. Likewise another day we went to meet
farmers who are engaged in organic farming it helps to gain information about pest and diseases
occurred in plants. On another day we surveyed on off seasonal vegetables farming which helps to
gather deep information about method to do off seasonal vegetables farming. In this way we
completed our survey on Organic Farming. By this survey we got a chance to learn about organic
farming in our village Nepal and we also gave them some suggestions that will improve organic
farming like how to prepare compost manure, how to water to the plants , etc.

CHAPTER 2: OVERVIEW OF THE COMMUNITY

Sudurpashchim Province is one of the seven provinces established by the new
constitution of Nepal which was adopted on 20 September 2015 . It borders the Tibet
Autonomous Region of China to the north, Karnali Province and Lumbini Province to the east, and
the India’s Uttarakhand to the west and Uttar Pradesh to the south. The province covers an area of
19,539 km
2
, or about 13.22% of the country’s total area. Initially known as Province No. 7, the
newly elected Provincial Assembly adopted Sudurpashchim Province as the permanent name for the
province in September 2018. As per a 28 September 2018 Assembly voting, the city of Godawari has
been declared the capital of the Province, But till now Dhangadhi serves as the temporary capital.
The province is coterminous with the former Far-Western Development Region, Nepal. The three
major cities in terms of population and economy are Dhangadhi, Bhimdutta (Mahendranagar), and
Tikapur.

Sudurpashchim province is rich in tradition and culture; there is much cooperation related to culture
and traditions practiced by the people for their survival. There are many important informal
institutionalized traditional cooperation practices among the rural people. For example, the Desawar
system of Kailali is one of the biggest community-based irrigation systems in South Asia, involving
thousands of rural farmers. The Desawar system, which is continuing for centuries, is now slowly
disappearing. Such a strong social institution, which was based on self-help and cooperation and
effectively functioning without any written document but institutionalized through social customs,
needs to be preserved. This study examined the functioning of this system. Moreover, there are
several other traditional forms of cooperation through which many schools, temples, and Tourism
places.

CHAPTER 3: COMMUNITY SERVICE PART

Activities done in our community service project are:
When we first got this idea, we went to our village Olani, Kailali for surveying about organic
farming and how to do it. We asked farmers about organic farming and how to do it. We learnt that
the process of organic farming and its importance . We gathered information about requirement
about organic farming. On another day, we asked them about necessities and requirements that are
needed for organic farming. By this day we came to know that it is difficult to fulfill requirements
in rural areas for organic farming. Likewise another day we went to meet farmers who are engaged
in organic farming it helps to gain information about pest and diseases occurred in plants. Many
people don’t know about organic farming in rural areas, so we aware them about organic farming
and its importance. On another day we surveyed on off seasonal vegetables farming which helps to
gather deep information about method to do off seasonal vegetables farming. In this way we
completed our survey on Organic Faming . By this survey we got a chance to learn about organic
farming in our village Nepal and we also gave them some suggestions that will improve organic
farming like how to prepare compost manure , how to water to the plants ,etc.

Organic farming a method of farming system which primarily aimed at cultivating the land and
raising crops in such a way, as to keep the soil alive and in good health by use of organic wastes
(crop, animal and farm wastes, aquatic wastes) and other biological materials along with
beneficial microbes (biofertilizers) to release nutrients to crops for increased sustainable
production in an eco friendly pollution free environment.

Why farmers do organic farming?

Organic farming helps to maintain environment health by reducing the level of pollution. It
reduces human and animal health hazards by reducing the level of residues in the product. It helps
in keeping agricultural production at a sustainable level. It reduces the cost of agricultural
production and also improves the soil health.

WEEKLY REPORT
WEEK – 1 (From 17-07-2023 to 23-07-2023)

Objective of the Activity Done:
Detailed Report: On first week ,we mainly focused on three things: i)What is organic farming?
How to do it and what are the challenges of it?
On first day, we went to one village of Kailali district of Nepal i.e. Olani for surveying about
organic farming and its benefits. We learnt process of organic farming and its benefits.
On second day we gathered information about requirements of organic farming and knew
that is difficult to fulfill requirements of organic farming in rural areas. On (Day-03) we
went to meet farmers of Attariya who are engaging in Organic farming. On that day we came
to know about pest and diseases in plants. Next day(Day-04) we tried to collect
information
On off seasonal vegetable farming and its its benefits to the producer as well as customer. There
are so many benefits of off seasonal vegetables. Suppose I want tomato during rainy season, I
can get easily if
Someone is doing off seasonal vegetable farming. Although. it is difficult to produce off
seasonal vegetables ,but it is more profitable to producer as off seasonal vegetables has high
demand and high
Price in the market. Off seasonal vegetable helps to maintain good health as well as farmers
can earn more profit.
On (day-05)We visited into Kolmuda to know about compost manure and method of
preparation of compost manure. Dry leaves, animals dung and urine are the basic requirements
For preparing compost fertilizer at home. Compost manner do not reduce the fertility of soil.It
makes
soil spongy and fertile. We can prepare it by decaying these basic components.
On the same day we observed Inter-cropping vegetable farming in Kolmuda, so we tried to
know about that. Inter-cropping vegetable farming is nothing but farming of one vegetables
with others.
Example: Cropping of carrot ,radish etc on that place where we have cropped potatoes.
On last day of first week, We surveyed on crop rotation and how to do it.
Crop rotation is practice of growing different types of crops in the same area in sequenced
seasons.
On first week we just tried to determine the problems in organic farming, Some of the major
problems are:
Lack of irrigation facilities ,lack of quality seeds, lack of transportation facilities, lack of
training to farmers and so on.
They are not having harvesting facilities in rural areas as well.
In this way we completed our first week survey and tried to determine the challenges in organic
farming.

Day – 1

We met the farmers who was rearing
animals(animal husbandry) and asked
them about animal husbandry and its
benefits.

Expenses are high but it is
easy to earn profit. Animal
can be sold for meat, milk
and so on. It also helps in
production of compost
fertilizer.

Day - 2

We visited farming of potatoes,
tomatoes and other vegetables in the
field.

We learnt that potatoes and
tomatoes farming is best in
case of earning profit.

Day – 3
Again we went to met all the farmers
whom we had already met to ask about
challenges of organic farming.
Less people are engaging in
organic farming as
production is low in organic
farming.

Day – 4
On this day, we saw two woman
planting paddy, so we asked them
about difficulties of plantation.
Lack of modern technology
makes work slower and
uncomfortable.

Day – 5
We gave suggestion to farmers who are
doing crop rotation and engaged in
other farming like vegetable farming
etc. like how to prepare organic
compost by using organic materials,
how to give water to small plants.
Drip irrigation system is
best irrigation system for
irrigation of crops and we
can prepare organic
compost fertilizer by
decaying of plant leaves,
animals dungs and urine.

Day –6

We gave details information about
diseases and problems occurred in
plants as well as animals and suggest
them prevention method.
Yellow vein mosaic, leaf
mosaic are some plant
disease, rabies, infectious
anemia are some animal
diseases. Maintain better
cleanliness and use
antibiotics for animals and
organic medicine to kill pest
and to control plant
diseases.

7.How to prepare organic fertilizer at home?
8.What are the plant diseases? How they can be cured?
9. What are the types of organic farming?

35

Describe the problems you have identified in the community

Problems:

Problem 1 : Lack of Fertile Land
Fertile land, which is decreasing day-by-day due to various human activities like deforestation, slash
and burn agriculture, and excessive ploughing as well as environmental pollution or soil pollution.
Problem 2 : Reduced Yields
When a farmer switches to organic farming, a substantial loss in yield is observed. This is because it
takes a lot of time for the soil to get used to biopesticides instead of chemical pesticides.
Problem 3 : Susceptible to Pest Attacks

The most common problem with organic farming is the frequency of pest attacks, which results in an
increase in crop destruction. The reason behind the high frequency of pest attacks is the enriched quality
of organic produce.
Problem 4 : High Input Costs
Small-scale farmers often have issues with the rising prices of organic farm inputs. So, they end up
using cheap and fake substitutes that promise to be organic but are actually not. Lack of knowledge and
proper education in organic farming is also a major issue.
Problem 5 : Shortage of Supply of Organic Inputs

Organic farmers are not sure about the quality of raw material and also doubt whether the composition
of the inputs contains organic or synthetic elements. Apart from this, raw material is not available in
sufficient quantities to meet the nutritional requirements of the crops. This affects the production and
results in low quality produce.
Problem 6: Hindrance in distribution
There is a lack of distribution networks as most of the organic farms are located far away from the cities.
This creates a lot of trouble for farmers as organic harvests take a lot of time to reach the market, which
eventually makes the quality and texture similar to conventionally grown produce.

Problem 7:Lack of proper irrigation system
Lack of irrigation reduce the growth and development of plants .Irrigation is the process of applying
water to the crops artificially to fulfill their water requirements.

36

Short-term and long-term action plan for possible solutions for the problems
identified and that could be recommended to the concerned authorities for
implementation.

Short term action plans:
1.Use of organic fertilizer rather than chemical fertilizer.
2.Do not pollute the soil as it reduces the fertility of soil.
3.Farmers should get good prices of their products and they should follow new techniques for more
and more production.
4.Maintain good irrigation system for supplying water to plants.
5.Transportation facilities should be available in rural areas so farmers can easily transport their
products to the market.
6.Prepare organic insecticides and pesticides to preserve plants from pest, insect and diseases.
7.Supply quality seeds to farmers.

Long term action plans:
1.Government should encourage farmers in organic farming rather than inorganic farming.
2.Create awareness program about importance of organic farming and its health benefits.
3.Conduct various training program by skilled manpower for farmers who are engaging in organic
farming.
4.Government should provide modern technology and good irrigation facilities to the farmers, so
they can do their work in easier and faster way.
5.Provide details information about nutrients of plants and how to maintain it.
6.Follow safety precautions like afforestation, to preserve from natural disasters.
7.Number of harvesting company should be established.
8.Identification of problems and diseases and method of prevention for these problems should be
done by skilled manpower.
9.Test the quality and Ph of soil and determine the suitable soil and time for specific crops and
vegetables.

37

Description of the Community awareness programme/s conducted w.r.t the problems
and their outcomes.

Problems and outcomes
1) One of the biggest challenges faced by organic farmers is pests and diseases. Because organic
farmers do not use synthetic pesticides or herbicides, they are more vulnerable to damage from
insects, fungi, and other pests. One way to combat this is to use traps and barriers, such as netting,
to keep pests away from crops. Another is to plant companion crops that can help repel pests or
attract beneficial insects that will prey on the pests. crop-rotation can also be used to help control
pests and diseases, as well as improve soil health.

2) Water availability is another big challenge for organic farmers. In many areas, organic farmers
are not able to access irrigation water, which can be a problem during periods of drought. One
solution is to use greywater from household activities like laundry and dishwashing to water
crops. Another is to collect rainwater in barrels or other containers. Mulching can also help
conserve water by preventing evaporation and keeping the soil moist.

3) Organic farmers also often struggle with a lack of access to markets for their products. Because
organic foods are often more expensive than conventional foods, they can be hard to sell. One
solution is to direct-market to consumers through farmers’ markets, Community Supported
Agriculture (CSA) programs, and online sales. Another is to sell to restaurants and grocery stores
that are willing to pay a premium for organic products.

Survey Description

We visited a remote locality (Olani) for soil investigation and to learn some Organic farming
techniques so we classified tasks into four parts and picturized below.

We personally met some residents of that area and enquired about soil fertility, PH level and depth of
water (ground water). We also done some basic soil tests and come to that it is suitable for mass paddy
filed cultivation not only paddy filed but also crop rotation is also be possible. When it comes to
communication and collaboration skills that we approached them in their native language. Collaboration
skills include collective acquiring people in a society for common goal and improvements in the society.
We visited area in week days there were only wiseman(old) sitting over walls given a chance to
investigate them for our project.

Demonstrated the importance of organic farming using technology photographs and some social media
articles and mainly local newspaper.

41.2% of responses. When comparing the frequency of responses across all survey groups,
Dhangadhi, Olani, My Club, and Kolmuda, lack of proper knowledge about organic farming was
the most common answer. The second and third most frequently answered problems were soil
pollution and unavailability of inorganic fertilizer i.e green manure/compost manure respectively.

46

CHAPTER 6: RECOMMENDATIONS AND CONCLUSIONS OF
THE MINI PROJECT

Our main learning from this project is learned life skills like leadership skills, self- confidence and
mainly learn to analyze anything or a concept or a project from root cause to peek moments through
a progressive approach and learned how to communicate and compromise with each other likewise
relating with by taking caring for plants and focusing on a topic like growth of plant when exposed to
sunlight some generalize them and adapt them to climatic conditions.

When we investigated in Olani there our key learning was how soil forms composure, fertility, PH level,
Chemicals composition, and how these soils are being degraded due to construction of industries and
dumping wastes into soil like nondegradable wastes (Plastics, harmful toxic waste, Contaminated
liquids) causing a serious threat to the environment/soil. Due to running of industry from years the
chemicals released where immersed deep into the soil which decreased the strength of the soil and
flourished out nutrients.

During our visit to Kolmuda there is more interaction with people with different ideology and
completely wide perspective towards society and various opinions on organic farming by mutual
sharing of knowledge common goals in the society can be achieved like providing organic seeds and
helps in making organic manure. When we had gone through Organic farmer’s yard in Dhangadhi,
we come to know we choose Organic agriculture and running as a career option which can be
economically profit because due to rapid industrialization and urbanization there is a chance for scarcity
of fertile lands and organic vegetables, fruits and other crops.so this can be choose keeping in mind
them as long-term goals.

Today generation we need to bring awareness of consequences that would take place about inorganic
farming harmful effects as well as inorganic harmful effect in human health and run some campaigns
and make sure that all farmers should use organic manures or fertilizers and organic pesticides like
green manure, Vermi-compost, compost manures, biofertilizers as well as biopesticides to preserve
soil quality and to protect crops and vegetables from pests and diseases. .

47

Reflect on your development of ATL skills.
A concept-based curriculum that uses ATL skills effectively enable all students to become
stronger, more self-regulated learners.
Communication skills are developed by through live interaction with people’s and
understanding their views and exchanging thoughts meeting different people with
variety of mindsets carrying out survey in various time lines completely different
approach.

Thinking skills are the time stamp route to approaches of learning are skills designed
to enable students “learn how to learn” these are intended to apply across curriculum
requirements and provided a mind map for us. We followed some techniques and
strategies that reflect our thought process towards the progress of the project more
clearly and visibly.

Research skills are discovered in us during key moments in project surveys and
investigation we come to know that one should know how to use resources in a proper
way with in the given time. Most of the required content is available on internet and
remaining from books.

Social skills are concerned with students cooperating and accepting challenges and
responsibility as we work for society in name of service and trying to resolve our
conflicts that our occurring in our group discussion and sometimes decisions which
improve our learning and sharing process and increased our sense of collaboration.

Self-management skills is the first and foremost to be learned by and every individual
before they join a group to perform a task so they utilize their strategy and thinking
process to universal thinking framework as a deep processing strategy and mental
modelling and we always try to uphold our motivation during project.
