M1 – comparison between two operating systems Ajay Jassi

Operating systems The two operating I decided to choose, to make a comparison between is Windows 8 and Mavericks. I choose these as Microsoft and Apple are competitors, so therefore they will compete to get their products better than one or other . Personally I think that Windows operating systems are better than Mac OS, however I feel that Apple’s operating systems are easier to use for basic users.

Microsoft Windows 8 Windows 8 was released around on 26 th October 2012 internationally. It is Microsoft’s latest operating system which has a completely new interface, but still can be used like Windows 7 with its desktop mode. There are 4 different versions of Windows 8 which are Windows 8, Windows 8 Pro, Windows 8 Enterprise and Windows RT. Unlike Windows Vista and 7 there is no Starter, Basic and Ultimate edition.

Windows 8 pricing These are the two main editions which are available to purchase in stores. Windows 8.1- £99.99 (MicrosoftStore December 2013) Windows 8.1 Pro - £189.99 (MicrosoftStore December 2013 ) Windows 8 can be brought from retail shops and might be cheaper from promotional offers.

Apple OS X Mavericks This new OS is Apple’s latest, and is available for most Apple Macs. The upgrade has made applications and software easier to use, for everyone. They also made it more powerful =for advance users. The operating system is more basic and much easier to user, for everyone. In Mavericks there is also a feature which makes portability easier, where users can view ands edit apple software with smaller Apple devices such as the iPhone and iPad.

Mavericks pricing This operating system is more like an update/upgrade which is free of charge if a previous Apple OS X is installed. There is only one version of this operating system, as it is free of charge. However there will be small updates within the operating system, but wouldn’t be anything major.

Comparison table Features Windows 8 OS X Mavericks App Store Windows Store App Store Security Built-in security ‘Windows Defender’. This is an antivirus protection software which detects and removes malware. Apple has a few security features built in which are: Gatekeeper (makes downloads safer) FileVault 2 ( encrypts data) Sand boxing ( blocks malicious codes) Backup System Image Backup (used mainly when upgrading OS) Time Machine (used mainly to transfer and back-up individual files) Start-up 12 seconds 15-17 seconds User Experience Fast user experience with responsive beautiful animations and metro style.
