Complex Sentences Definition, Structure, Components, and Examples

What is a Complex Sentence? O ne independent clause and at least one dependent clause. Shows relationships such as cause, time, contrast, condition, or purpose. I stayed home because it was raining.

Components of Complex Sentences Independent Clause: expresses a complete thought. Example: She loves reading. Dependent Clause: cannot stand alone. Example: Although she was tired. Subordinating Conjunction: connects clauses. Example: because, although, since, while, if.

Structures of Complex Sentences Independent Clause + Dependent Clause Example: I went to bed early because I was tired. Dependent Clause + Independent Clause Example: Because I was tired, I went to bed early.

Punctuation in Complex Sentences If the dependent clause comes first, use a comma. Because it was late, she went to sleep. I f the independent clause comes first, no comma is needed. She went to sleep because it was late.
