COMPONENTS OF THE
INTERNET AND THE
WORL WIDE WEB
Prepared by: JonnahGante
INTERNET
Started in the late 1960’s from U.S Department of
Defence’sAdvanced Research Projects Agency
(ARPA)
The worldwide connections of networks are called
internet
Networks may be LANor WAN
LAN
(LOCAL AREA NETWORK)
Network that covers only a limited geographical
area.
ex: classroom, computer laboratory, office or
group of buildings
Consists of a server and several computers
Server is the one that manages the resources in a
network and provides central storage for data
and programs
WAN
(WIDE AREA NETWORK)
Network that covers a large geographical area like
a city
Consists of several LANs
HOW DOES INTERNET WORK?
Packet–is a data that has been broken into small
piece of data
ex: email message, file, graphic
contain the small piece of data together with
the recipient or destination, sender or
origin and sequence of information to
reassemble the data at the destination
when travels the network, it finds the fastest
path available to arrive at the destination
through a device called router
Router–is a hardware device that allows you to
connect several computers and other devices to a
single Internet connection
serves as a traffic cop for network signals
router send the packets along alternate paths
Packet switching –a technique for breaking the
data into packets, sending it through the best path
using the router and reassembling the data when
it arrives at its destination
network should follow a protocol or standard
called TCP/IPorTransmission Control
Protocol.
TCP/IP -is the protocol used by the Internet for
packet switching
INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDER
ISP-a private company or government organization
that lets you to
connect into the vast Internet around the world
offers various Internet connection speeds for
monthly fee
speed you get depends of the following:
speed is measured in megabits per second (Mbps)
distance of your computer to the telephone
exchange and the condition of the cables
services are online storage of data, email, hold
digital photos, hosting own web pages
DIFFERENT TYPES OF
CONNECTION TO THE INTERNET:
DSL –services uses a broadband connection.
connects to the Internet via a phone line, does
not require to have a landline at home
Cable–connects to the Internet via cable TV
uses broadband connection and can be faster
than DSL service
only available where cable TV is available
Satellite–connection uses broadband that
connects to the internet through satellites
orbiting the Earth
connections usually slower than DSL or
cable
3G and 4G –service is commonly used with
mobile phones that connects wirelessly through
ISP’s network
WORLD WIDE WEB
World Wide Web –one of the services of the
Internet
a collection of webpages found in this
network of computers
it is a system of hyperlinked or
hypertext documents accessed via the
Internet
exist in early 1990, since then, it has
been widely used
Hyperlinks or “links” –allow users to navigate
quickly from one webpage to another
WEBPAGE, WEBSITE, AND
HOMEPAGE
Webpage–consists of text, graphics, sounds,
videos and even animations
Website-collection of webpages
Homepage–the first page of a website
Webmaster or Web developer –person
responsible for developing webpages and
maintaining them
Hypertext Markup Language –programmatic
language that web pages are based on
Commands your web browser to display
text and graphics in an orderly fashion
Example of tags used in HTML
<body></body>
<a href=“www.about.com”></??????>
<title></title>
Web publishing tools:
Microsoft Word
Dreamweaver
Publisher
Apple iWork
Other programs that are used to publish and
maintain webpages
2 Kinds of Webpage:
Static webpage –is a fixed webpage
Dynamic webpage –displays different contents
from the same source code whenever visited.
Examples of dynamic webpage: weather,
ticket availability for flights, or stocks
For components of URL:
PROTOCOL
DOMAIN NAME
FOLDER
FILENAME
Protocol
set of rules and guidelines for communicating
data
URLs begin with http://
Domain Name
Unique reference that identifies a website
DIFFERENT TOP DOMAIN NAMES
Domain Names Descriptions
.com Commercial organization, business

WEB BROWSERS AND WEB
SERVERS
Webbrowsers-is a software that allows users to
access and view webpages
The one that translates the tags from the
source document into a functional and
