Environmental Demand
Comfort Cooling
•Comfort-cooling
environments require
seasonal cooling for human
comfort at reasonable air
flow and fresh air
requirements.
•Comfort cooling
environments have doors
leading directly to the
outside and a considerable
amount of out side air
influence.
Precision Cooling
•Precision Cooling
environments require
dense and dry heat
rejection at higher air flow
with adequate ESP to avoid
hot spots.
•Precision cooling
environments generate
much higher heat per
square foot and have
limited access and no direct
means of out side air
influence.
Quick Review
Latent Cooling:
Latent cooling is the ability of the Air-
Conditioning system to remove moisture.
Latent cooling is important in typical comfort
cooling system to maintain the comfortable
balance of temperature and humidity for
people.
Typical comfort cooling system is designed to
meet higher latent cooling.
Quick Review
Sensible Cooling:
Sensible cooling is the ability of the Air-
Conditioning system to remove heat that can
be measured by a thermometer.
IT equipment generate sensible heat.

Comfort Cooling Systems
Vs
Precision Cooling Systems
Comfort Cooling System
•Typical comfort cooling
units are designed to
provide only temperature
control with wider tolerance
using regular thermostat.
•Designed for more latent
cooling demand
Precision Cooling System
•Precision cooling systems
are designed to provide
total temperature and
humidity control using
microprocessor controller
with tight tolerance.
•Designed for more sensible
cooling demand.
Comfort Cooling Systems
Vs
Precision Cooling Systems
Comfort Cooling System
•Designed to operate an
average of 8 hours per day,
5 days per week during
summer time only.
•Air cooled systems are
inoperable due to lack of
head pressure control
bellow 32 Deg. F. ambient
temperature.
Precision Cooling System
•Designed to operate 24
hours per day, 365 days per
year regardless of the
outside weather conditions.
•A precision A/C system can
operate effectively to -30
Deg. F. in air cooled models.
Comfort Cooling Systems
Vs
Precision Cooling Systems
•Comfort air conditioning
systems have a sensible
heat ration of 0.60 to 0.70.
That means they are 60 to
70% dedicated to lowering
the temperature and 30 to
40% dedicated to lowering
the humidity.
Precision Cooling System
•Precision air conditioning
systems have been designed
with sensible heat ration of
0.85 to 1.0. This means they
are 85 to 100% dedicated to
lowering the temperature
and 0-15% dedicated to
lowering the humidity.
Comfort Cooling System
Comfort Cooling Systems
Vs
Precision Cooling Systems
Comfort Cooling System
•Higher latent heat rejection
at lower cfm causes low
humidity concerns which
increases humidification
demand in data center.
•Higher operating cost.
•Comfort cooling systems
range from 350 to 400 CFM
per ton.
•Increase chances of hot
spots.
Precision Cooling System
•Higher sensible heat ratio
helps the data center to
lower the temperature
without lowering the
humidity.
•Reduced operating cost.
•Precision air conditioning
system typically supply 500
CFM or higher per ton.
•Reduce chances of hot
spots.
Comfort Cooling Systems
Vs
Precision Cooling Systems
Comfort Cooling System
•Functions of comfort
cooling system:
Cooling
Heating(Heat Pump)
Precision Cooling Systems
•Functions of precision
cooling system:
Cooling
Humidification
Dehumidification
Reheat
Humidity Control
•Data centers/Computer Rooms require total
temperature and Humidity Control.
•Due to higher sensible heat ratio, the moisture removal is less
in precision A/C, means lowering operating cost.
•Precision A/C provides total temperature and humidity
control. Humidification and Dehumidification are standard
features.
•Humidifier unit is typically a separate unit for comfort cooling
system.
