CONCEPT OF जारण PRESENTED BY Dr.V. SRIKANTH PG SCHOLAR 1 ST YEAR Dr. NRS GOVT AYURVEDIC COLLEGE VIJAYAWADA

परिभाषा जीर्यते अनेन इति जारण । ( वाचस्पत्य ) which means a substance which can digest or which can cause decay of any substance . It refers to digestion of metals and minerals by Parada . जारण हि नाम गालनपातनव्यतिरेकेन ग्रस्तघनहेमदिरसस्य पूर्ववस्था प्रतिपन्नत्वम् । ( अ.प 1/107) जारण is a procedure where the mercury digests the selected metals and minerals ( Swarna , abraka etc;) in it without undergoing any of the procedures like गालन (melting) and पातन (distillation); and more importantly remains in its earlier form with absolutely no change in its weight and its physical state.

सूते गन्धाधि निक्षेपात्तत्विधिविशेषतः। गन्धाद्यं जार्यते यत्तु जारणं तदिहोच्यते।। ( र. त 5 / 100 ) The pharmaceutical procedure that enables the parada to digest gandhaka and other metals and minerals in it, is known as जारण Samskar .To imbibe the power of digestion ( jarana shakti ) in mercury one needs to process it with specified pharmaceutical procedures ( tattadvidhi visesa ). The pharmaceutical procedures includes swedana , mardana etc which may be accomplished by using some instruments like valuka yantra , kacchapa yantra etc द्रुत ग्रास परिणामो विडयन्त्रादि योगात:। जारण इत्युच्यते तस्य प्रकार सन्ति कोटिश:।। (र. च 4/102) When molten Graasa (metal content of minerals & a few metals ) of various metals or molten Satva are processed with Parada by using different Yantras like Vida Yantra ; those Graasa get digested completely in Parada . This phenomenon is known as जारण

Jarana is a process in which Mercury remains in its original form even after ingesting dhatus like Abhraka Sattwa , Swarna etc. At the end of the process of Jarana , Mercury not only retains its original form but also its weight remains un-changed. But in jarana , Mercury can not be utilized for therapeutic purposes as done in murchan due to the fact that it regains its original liquid form and appearance. Jarana process is done with a view to process Mercury for Dhatu-vada /Rasa- vedha (Transmutation of base metals to Higher metals) purpose. This is also performed to induce Rasayana property to Mercury.

जारण - Interpretations In RasaShastra , the concept of जारण can be interpreted in various contexts as follows- जारण as a Parada Samskara जारण as Gandhaka / Bali Jaarana जारण of Puti Lohas NB: In Ayurveda Prakasha , the author has mentioned that मूर्छन and जारण can be used synonymously.

जारण and मूर्छन जारण मूर्छन Creates mukha by adding bida in parada Imbibing vyadhinasaka shakthi in parada Useful in dehavada but more useful in lohavada Useful in dehavada Jaritha parada is potent but cannot be consumed until it undergoes murchana and emerges as compound formation. Parada emerges in the form of khalveeya parpati, pottali, kupipakwa rasayanaushadha

जारण संस्कार As per Dhanwantari Samhita, संस्कार is the unique processing of पारद which apart from alleviating पारद Doshas, also imparts Bala and Tejas to पारद . जारण is of the13th samskara among 18 samskara of parada . जारण is an important process in which पारद is made to consume or ingest and digest various satvas obtained from minerals and some of the metals in different proportions inorder to make the पारद highly potential for both lohaveda and rasayana point of view.

जारण क्रम According to many Rasa classics , गन्धक जारण has to be carried out initially. According to Rasa Chintamani, गन्धक जारण should be carried out initially followed by अभ्रक , हेम , नाग and other पूति लोह and रत्न जारण . Without गन्धक the पारद cannot get क्षुत for जारण of धातुs , thus by गन्धक जारण,पारद अग्नि get increased. GANDHAKA JARANA ABRAKA JARANA HEMA NAGA PUTILOHA

Why गन्धक जारण is done first?????? पारद is considerd as शिव तेज and गन्धक and अभ्रक is considered as गौरी तेज . Due to समान स्वभावात् , they can interact easily and able to built a strong bond between them. Chemically mercury being a large element, it contains lots of spaces between the orbits as well as electrons. So being a small element, sulphur can easily get into the vacant space and can form a strong bond between them.

Stages of जारण According to Rasa RatnaSamucchaya, the process of Jaarana has been explained under 3 stages. 1. चारण of ग्रास which includes the addition of Graasa into Parada. 2. द्रावण which involves liquefyingof ग्रास in Parada. 3. जारण in which the ग्रास gets merged into Parada completely.

जारण भेद समुख जारण : The process of digesting selected metals and minerals or precious stones only after creating the desired hunger( mukha )in shuddha parada is called समुख जारण निर्मुखा जारण : The process of digesting selected metals and minerals or precious stones without creating the desired hunger in shuddha parada is known as निर्मुख जारण .In this जारण only limited drugs can be digested in पारद . NB:. Inorder to digest the grasa put into parada a bida prepared from kshara , amla, mutra e.t.cis added to पारद जारण समुख निर्मुख

वासनमुख जारण First put gandhaka for jarana in parada after that 16 times swarasa of divyaoushadhis are taken in dola yantra as drava dravya and subject the parada for swedana …the process is called vasanamukha . Parada which treated with divyaoushadhi by keeping it in a musha & which was able to consume all types of metals and minerals is called rakshasa vaktran – jarana of metals & minerals. – jarana of ratna . Bhuchari Khechari

Bhuchari Jarana is further classified into a) Bala ; b) Yuva and Vriddha Jarana . BALA JARANA: When the process of jarana is carried till Mridu-Pachana , it is called Bala Jarana . According to some scholars, when Abhraka is taken in equal quantity of Parada, the process is called Bala Jarana . YUVA JARANA: When jarana process is carried out with four times of Abhraka to that of Mercury, it is then called Yuva Jarana . VRIDDHA JARANA: When Abhraka is taken Six-time to that of Mercury during jarana process, it is called Vriddha-Jarana ( Shatgunabhraka ).

गन्धक जारण / बलि जारण गन्धक जारण i s a process in which Shuddha गन्धक is added in different proportions to पारद and processed in fire thereby extra गन्धक added to पारद gets burntoff by heating in some specially designed yantras. It is claimed that by this process, पारद gets potentiated in many ways and potentiation depends upon the proportion of गन्धक added and the duration of its burning in पारद . In most of the Rasa classics, it has been mentioned that गन्धक जारण must be done at first followed by others. According to Rasa Chintamani, without doing Gandhaka Jaarana , Parada will not be able to consume other Dhatus (metals). According to Rasa Tarangini , though Parada is Asta Samskarita or extracted from Hingula , it will not possess Roganaashaka potency until it is processed with Gandhaka .

Yantras used for जारण Nearly 20 Yantras have been mentioned in Rasa Paddhati. Kacchapa Yantra. Valuka Yantra. Bhudhara Yantra. Garbha Yantra. Ishtika Yantra. Tula Yantra. Damaru Yantra etc. Have been mentioned as the heating apparatuses in the process of Jaarana .

गन्धक मात्र for जारण In Rasa Classics, the quantity of Gandhaka to be added is mentioned as 1/64 th of पारद or सम equal quantity द्विगुण Double चतुः Four times षड् 6 times अष्टा 8 times षोडश 16 times द्वात्रिंशत् 32 times चतुःषष्टि 64 times शत 100 times सहस्र 1000 times

जारण फल (acc to Rasa tarangini )

गन्धक जारण भेद : In Rasa Classics, mainly 2 types of गन्धक जारण have been mentioned depending upon its procedure. अन्तर्धुम विधि : It is a closed method of Jaarana . Here, Graasa are digested in Shuddha Parada by enclosing all the drugs in aKachakupi or Musha . It is usually carried out in Kacchapa Yantra or Bhudara Yantra. This method takes longer time to get completed than the other method. It is considered as the best method because by this method, Parada is imparted with 1000 times potentiation and the Dhatus will get converted into Gold. बहिर्धुम विधि : This is the open method of Jaarana. Here , Gandhaka or other Dhatus are digested in Shuddha Parada in a specified Musha or Kachakupi placed in Valuka Yantra.Mouth of the kupi has to be closed after disappearance of smoke of gandhaka. It is completed within short time.

Procedure of गन्धक जारण : . Thus, in Shadguna Bali Jaarana, 1 part of Gandhaka to be added 6 times consecutively. At the end, when all theGandhaka is reduced, Parada is washed with warm water and filtered through a cloth. Thus, Shadguna Bali Jaaritha Parada is considered most potent than others from both Rasayana and chikitsa point of view Kajjali should be prepared from shudha parada and specified quantity of shudha gandhaka A musha is placed in valuka yantra and kajjali in equal quantity is ignited When liquified gandhaka reduces to half,1 more part of gandhaka is added and heated Same procedure is repeated till all the gandhaka gets burnt off.

Heating process The heating process should be carried ot in kramagni pattern. The process should be started with Mridu agni (120⁰c-250⁰c)for 6 hrs and gradually increased to Madyama agni (250⁰c-450⁰c) for 6hrs and ended with Teevragni (450⁰ c-630⁰c)for 6 hrs

Jarana of Puti lohas Puti lohas are those metals that have low melting point.eg –Naga , vanga, yasada . Its reference is found in Ayurveda prakasa for the first time. This procedure is carried out after shodhana and before marana . In this process specified putilohas are melted and mixed with herbal drug powders like apamarga churna or aswatha churna and rubbed vigorously by iron ladle until the metal turns to complete powder form.once powdered,it is covered with a sarava and subjected to teevra agni .

Conclusion The process of jarana is important in all aspects of Rasasastra including lohavada and Dehavada . It is capable of adding more pharmaceutical as well as chemical properties to parada.from chikitsa and rasayana point of view gandhaka jarana plays a vital role in eradicating all the diseases. Shadguna balijaritha parada - sarva rogahara and adbhuta karyakrit Puti loha jarana helps to convert them into powder form through oxidation thereby facilitating furtherprocedures like marana .
