NUTRACEUTICALS AND AYURVEDA
Although the concept of nutraceuticals have gained popularity more in the recent times, its roots can be traced in Ayurveda. तच्च नित्यं प्रयुञ्जीत स्वास्थ्यं येनानुवर्तते I अजातानां विकाराणामनुत्पत्तिकरं च यत् II च . सू . 5 /13 “The diet which besides providing the basic nutrition to the body, helps to maintain the healthy state of the body and prevents the occurrence of diseases should be consumed.”
RASAYANA 3 types नैमित्तिक (for specific disorders) काम्य (for vitality, intellect, etc.) आजस्रिक (for general health) This includes daily consumption of specific food products such as milk and ghee to rejuvenate the body. आजस्रिकं क्षीरघृताभ्यासाधिकं I
PATHYA “ पथ्ये सति गदार्तस्य किमौषधिनिषेवणैः। पथ्येऽसति गदार्तस्य किमौषधिनिषेवणैः॥ ” - लोलीम्बराज There is no need of medicine for the one who follows proper diet. There is no use of medicine for the one who doesn’t. Food itself is the best medicine . Ayurveda has always emphasized the importance of Food in therapeutics. Pathya (wholesome diet) has been indicated in treatment of every disease .
Disparity between traditional and modern concept of nutraceuticals Ayurveda has clearly differentiated between Ahara Dravya and Aushadhi Dravya . Charak has categorized the food items into 12 Ahara Varga while Aushadhi Varga has been mainly described in 50 Mahakashaya . In recent times, modern nutraceuticals are being added with medicinal herbs as active ingredients in various forms e.g. extracts, powders, etc. This blurs the line between pharmaceuticals and nutraceuticals.
CONCLUSION Foods which have nutritive value as well as therapeutic application are known as nutraceuticals. Market share of nutraceuticals is increasing exponentially due to the benefits they offer to both the consumers as well as industries. Ayurveda has included nutraceuticals under concepts of Rasayana and Pathya . Food has been given major significance in therapeutics in Ayurveda. Ayurvedic and modern concepts of nutraceuticals differ from each other. Ayurveda has clear differentiation between food and medicine.
