Conjunction used to join clauses, phrases, and words together for constructing sentences . Conjunctions make a link between/among words or groups of words to other parts of the sentence and show a relationship between/among them . They may often be small words, but conjunctions are highly functional and very important for constructing sentences . The main job of conjunctions are connectors or linkers.

Coordinating Conjunction Types of Conjunction Subordinating Conjunction Correlative Conjunction

F or – presents reason A nd – presents non-contrasting ideas N or- presents non contrasting negative ideas B ut- presents contrast or exception O r- presents an alternative item or idea Y et – presents a contrast or exceptions S o – present a consequence Coordinating Conjunction A word that joins two elements of equal grammatical rank and syntactic importance. They can join two verbs, two nouns, two adjectives, two phrases, or two independent clauses.

Examples The children ran and jumped all over the playground . ( two verbs) Would you like cereal or toast for breakfast ? ( two nouns) The old castle seemed grand yet mysterious . ( two adjectives) Slowly but surely, the turtle finished the race. (two adverbs) I love candy bars, yet I know they are not good for me. My doctor has told me this, but I don’t want to listen . (two independent clauses) 6. I've drunk six cups of coffee today,  so  I've got a headache . (two independent clauses) 7. She doesn't drink milk,  nor  does she eat butter. (two phrases)

An independent clause is essentially a clause that can exist by itself in a given sentence which means that it doesn’t need any additional information to exist because it can stand alone as a complete sentence . A subordinate or dependent claus e is one which cannot exist or stand alone by itself as a sentence and only provides some additional information to the main clause (independent clause). Subordinating Conjunction A type of conjunction that connects or joins an independent clause with a subordinate clause .

Examples 1 . before –at an earlier time e. g. Before dinner, you have to submit the report for approval . 2. since –from a past time until now e. g. Since the party, she has not spoken to him at all 3. whether – used to indicate choices or possibilities e. g. We have to answer this test whether we like it or not . 4. while –a period of time especially when short and marked by the occurrence of an action e. g. Someone called while you were out. 5. as long as –provided that e. g. I might as well go out as long as I’ve got my boots.

6. once –one time and no more. e. g. We try to get together once every month. 7. though –in spite of the possibility e. g. Though it was raining, we went hiking . 8. Although - it introduces conditions or events that are different from what is expected . e.g. Although it is the richest country in the world, the U.S. has one of the worst healthcare systems . 9. because - it shows or tells us the reason why people suffered . e.g. A lot of people suffered because of COVID-19 . 10. If - It is used to express a condition that is necessary in order for something to happen . e.g. If there’s already a vaccine, all things will be back to normal.

Activity 1 Directions : Encircle the subordinating conjunction in each sentence. 1. Our Taguig City Government has been supporting Taguigenos since the early stages of this pandemic crisis. 2. CORRELATIVE CONJUNCTIONS A correlative conjunction is a type of conjunction of a couple of words that correlate two words, two phrases, or two clauses that are used in a sentence. This conjunction is used in pairs, so it is also known as paired conjunctions. It also connects a complete sentence with another one, which shows the bond of ideas of two different sentences.
