LESSON OBJECTIVES: At the end of the lesson, you should be able to: 1. Describe Wegener’s theory of continental drift. 2. Summarize the evidences that support Wegener’s theory. 3. Cite the flaws of the continental drift.
Guess the picture …. DETECTIVE CONAN Detective Conan is a teenage detective named Shinichi Kudo , who is poisoned by an evil group called "The Black Organization" to kill him. However, the poison instead turned him into a small child. He adopts a new identity as "Conan Edogawa", and lives with his girlfriend, Ran Mouri , and her father, Detective Kogoro Mori, under the pretense that his parents are away and unable to take care of him. As a child, Shinichi/Conan helps Kogorou solve murder cases, while trying to find the evil men who poisoned him, to steal the poison and create an antidote.
Same with Detective Conan, a man named Alfred Wegener did lots of investigations to explain his evidence of plate movement which he call “Continental Drift”.

CONTINENTAL DRIFT THEORY was proposed by Alfred Lothar Wegener (1880-1930), who was a German polar researcher, geophysicist, and meteorologist.
CONTINENTAL DRIFT THEORY What happened to the landmasses of the Earth several hundreds of millions years ago that continues to do so until now according to the continental drift theory?
CONTINENTAL DRIFT THEORY This theory suggested that about 200 mya , the continents were once one large landmass called Pangaea. PANGAEA – a Greek word which means “ All Earth” This Pangaea started to break into two smaller supercontinent called Laurasia and Gondwanaland. Then broke into the continents and these continents separated and drifted apart since then.
What are the evidences laid out by Alfred Wegener to support his claims on the drifting continents?
EVIDENCES The Continental Jigsaw Puzzle Evidence from Fossils Evidence from Rocks Evidence from Paleontology
1. The Continental Jigsaw Puzzle Continents “fit together” like puzzle pieces. Can you give pair/s of continents that seem to fit together?
2. Evidence from Fossils Similar fossils have been discovered in matching coastlines on different continents.
3. Evidence from Rocks Age and rock layers in different continents line up together with layers that exactly matched.
4. Evidence on Paleoclimatology Paleoclimatology – it is the study of previous climates that have existed during Earth’s different geologic ages. A. COAL DEPOSITS B. GLACIAL STRIATIONS / DEPOSITS
4. Evidence on Paleoclimatology A. COAL DEPOSITS Coal beds were formed from the compaction and decomposition of swamp plants that lived millions of years ago. Coal deposits have been found in temperate and polar regions; however, coal is formed in tropical regions.
4. Evidence on Paleoclimatology B. GLACIAL STRIATIONS / DEPOSITS Glacial deposits, including structures that indicate ice flow direction are located in ancient rocks that are now close to the equator.
Why didn’t people believe in continental drift? People couldn’t image how the earth could be millions of years old. People couldn’t image a force great enough to move the continents BUT by the 1960’s evidence would prove continental drift is TRUE and…. The story continues (as does all good science!) Did the scientists of Wegener’s time accepted his theory of drifting continents? ABSOLUTELY NO!!!! NO!!!! NO!!!! NO!!!!
