3. Summary When hot magma in the mantle is churning, it causes plates to move in different directions. At a convergent boundary, two plates meet one another, they converge. There are two types of plates—oceanic and continental. When two oceanic plates meet, they create a trench and island arc. When two continental plates meet, they create a mountain range. When a continental plate and an oceanic plate meet, they create a trench and a volcano. Lastly, there are usually earthquakes at a convergent boundary because of the movements of the plates colliding with each other.
