Diagnosis of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) Key Components and Tests
1. Medical History - Detailed history of symptoms: - Chronic cough - Sputum production - Shortness of breath - Assessment of risk factors: - Smoking history - Exposure to pollutants or occupational hazards
2. Physical Examination - Check for signs of COPD: - Wheezing - Decreased breath sounds - Signs of respiratory distress
3. Pulmonary Function Tests (PFTs) - Spirometry: - Measures amount of air exhaled and speed - Key measurement: FEV1/FVC ratio - In COPD, this ratio is typically < 0.70
4. Chest Imaging - Chest X-ray: - Helps rule out other conditions - May show signs of COPD (hyperinflation) - CT Scan: - Detailed imaging to reveal emphysema and abnormalities
5. Arterial Blood Gas (ABG) Analysis - Measures levels of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the blood - Assesses lung function
6. Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency Test - Blood test for alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency - Considered in younger patients or those with a family history
7. Exercise Testing - Six-minute walk test or other exercise tests - Evaluates impact of COPD on physical capacity
