4. Short definition Selection is concerned with answering questions; what material should be selected to suit the objectives of the given course (Nunan, 1998; Nation & Macalister, 2010). Gradation, on the other hand, is related to how the selected materials can be sorted to achieve the best results. Traditionally, complexity has been the criterion for sequencing materials. It has been a process from the simplest to the most difficult linguistic units (Nunan, 1998). In a recent work on Materials Development, Nation and Macalister (2010) proposed a linear and modular approach to material sequencing and grading.
