The file provides an in-depth explanation of cortisol, a steroid hormone secreted by the adrenal cortex. It outlines its role in regulating metabolism, supporting various bodily systems (cardiac, respiratory, reproductive, and immune), and managing glucose levels. The presentation highlights cortisol's therapeutic use in treating autoimmune diseases, its effects on organ systems, and its association with conditions like osteoporosis and Addison's crisis. Additionally, it details the potential side effects of prolonged cortisol use, such as diabetes, hypertension, and poor wound healing, emphasizing the need for careful management and gradual discontinuation to avoid adverse effects.

cortisol Cortisol Is a steroid hormone which is secreted from the adrenal cortex of adrenal gland , and regulate the metabolism of carbohydrates , proteins and lipids and has many other functions in the body. - A steroid hormone is a steroid that acts as a hormone. - why it's called a steroid hormone ?! Because it's contains the steroid ring . As show in this picture.
Functions of cortisol. 1- For Cardiac System : Increase the blood pressure : by retention of sodium and salts in the body Which increase the fluid that cause increasing the blood pressure. 2- For respiratory System: due to. 1- Bronchodilation. 2- Synthesis of surfactant . 3- Anti inflammatory. Cortisol in large does inhibit inflammation reaction and inhibiting release of lysosome enzymes by stabilizing membrane to Protection the enzymes inside lysosome ,Anti angiogenesis and photoceptor survival .
4_reproductive system due to- 1- Gonadal function that’s. A- in the male help in the spermato genesis ( which means formation of the sperm) B- help regulation of the menstruation cycle. 2- fetal organ development and maturation. 5- Integumentary system include A) Anti inflammatory. B) delayed wound healing. C) Epithelial integrity. 6- glucose and liver metabolism for glucose metabolism: increase sugar in the blood why ? 1/Because cortisol is act as anti insulin doesn't permit the insulin to energy the cells which increase the sugar in blood . 2/Because of gluconeogenesis ( formation of carbohydrates from non carbohydrates sources from proteins and lipids).
Explain : 1-Why the use of cortisol lead to the osteoporosis? Because It's causes protein catabolism & Release the calcium from the bone... 2-Why the usr of cortisol caoses wound healing? - Because it breaks proteins responsible for wound healing . What is more sick that pulls calcium from the body? ( Hyper-bara- thyrodism ) This disease is the result of a swelling (Tumor ) of thyroid gland . NOte : if the cortisol stoped suddenly, it will be causes adeson crisis and causes death, So we must do the dose gradually. - crisis If the percentage of cortisol increases ,that will lead to Koching and if it's percentage was less than the normal, that will lead to Adison crisis.
7 . immune system suppression of pro-inflammatory cytokines regulation of immune cell , maturation , migration and apoptosis it inhibits inflammatory substances taking it in an amount greater than what is in the body works to inhibit immunity in the case of immune diseases in which the immune system attacks the body's tissues one of immune disease ( systemic lupus ) autoimmune disease . - autoimmune disease : antibodies attack the body itself (body cells) - it is possible attack the liver and cause hepatitis it is possible attack the muscles and cause muscle pain. - it is possible attack red blood cells and works to crack to red blood cells and causes anemia. - the only treatment for immune disease is cortisol it is causes immune decrease cortisol causes side effects .
- cortisol used before two weeks from members transplants for large doses they make immunosity zero and enter the patient in a sterile room to avoid inflammation that causes by microorganisms in T lymphocytes , B lymphocytes ,natural killer cells always cortisol work inhibition to T lymphocytes cortisol function is always inhibition to immune system and it is the main treatment in autoimmune diseases . - treatment by cortisol must stop gradually when stop treatment suddenly possible happen addison's crisis and the person dies (autoimmune disease )…
What the relationship between cortisol and osteoporosis. ? Cortisol do protein catabolism and release calisium from the bone and reduce the osteoporosis. - Side effects of cortisol? There Are more than 20 Side effects there are the most abundant. 1- Diabetes 2- Hypertension 3- Osteoporosis 4-Peptic ulser 5- insomnia 6- Edma 7- Healing poor wound 8- less tissues and weakness muscles . Done,,,
