NON-COMMUNICABLE DISEASE QUARTER IV: HEALTH MAPEH Teacher SYRA MAE O. BAYBAYAN PREVENTION AND CONTROL OF DISEASES AND DISORDERS

OBJECTIVES At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to: Discuss the nature of non-communicable diseases; Explain NCDs based on cause and effect, signs and symptoms, risk factors and protective factors and possible complications; and Practice ways to prevent and control non-communicable diseases. PREVENTION AND CONTROL OF DISEASES AND DISORDERS

NON-COMMUNICABLE DISEASE Non communicable disease cannot be transmitted from one person to another. Many of these diseases are caused by unhealthy lifestyle. Some do not cause problems until the person is quite old. It is account for a large and increasing burden of disease worldwide. NCD kill 41 million people each year, equivalent to 71% of all deaths globally.

RISK FACTORS

NON-COMMUNICABLE DISEASE HERE ARE SOME COMMON

ACA-CARD A LLERGY C ARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE A STHMA C ANCER A RTHRITIS R ENAL FAILURE D IABETES

A LLERGY

ALLERGENS The substance that trigger allergy First thing you should know is that your allergy will last as long as you are exposed to the trigger. Which is why you have to know what your allergens are!

ALLERGY

C ARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE Disease of the heart and blood vessels. These include heart disease and vascular diseases. Heart (cardio) Diseases Vascular (blood vessel) diseases

Heart (cardio) Diseases Congenital heart disease Congestive heart failure Arrhythmia Rheumatic heart disease Myocardial infarction (heart attack) b. Vascular (blood vessel) diseases Arteriosclerosis Atherosclerosis Hypertension or high blood pressure Stroke Aneurysm

A STHMA a condition in which your airways narrow and swell and may produce extra mucus. This can make breathing difficult and trigger coughing, a whistling sound (wheezing) when you breathe out and shortness of breath. Symptoms: shortness of breath, wheezing, coughing and chest tightness.

C ANCER Caused by abnormal cells growing without control. As these abnormal cells grow, they form in masses called tumors. Tumors can be either be: Benign- Masses of cells that are not cancerous and do not spread. Malignant- Masses of cells that are cancerous. They may spread to other parts of the body by moving along the blood vessels or through the lymph system. This spreading called metastasis. Most common cancers Skin Colon and rectum Lungs Breast Reproductive organ Bone marrow ( leukemia and lymphoma)

WARNING SIGNS OF CANCER: CAUTION-UP! C hange in bowel or bladder habits A sore that does that not heal U nusual bleeding or discharge T hickening or lump in breast or elsewhere I ndigestion or difficulty in swallowing O bvious change in wart or mole N agging cough or hoarseness U nexplained weight loss P ersistent hoarseness

A RTHRITIS Refers to the inflammation of joints. It is usually occurring during old age. Rheumatoid arthritis b. Osteoarthritis

R ENAL/ KIDNEY FAILURE A medical condition in which the kidneys fail to adequately filter waste products from the blood.

D IABETES Disease that prevents the body from converting food into energy. Carbohydrates are normally changed into a simple sugar called glucose. Type I Diabetes Type II Diabetes Signs and Symptoms: EXCESSIVE Urination (polyuria) Thirst (polydipsia) Hunger (polyphagia)

D IABETES Type I diabetes - does not produce insulin, it is also diagnosed during childhood or adolescence. Type II diabetes - the body produces insulin, but it’s not used effectively. It is usually diagnosed in adults.

LET’S GENERALIZE What is NCD? What is the acronym for you to remember the common NCDs? Enumerate the diseases under NCD. How are you going to avoid the occurrence of allergy? What happen during myocardial infarction? Explain. What happen to the airways during the attack of asthma? Differentiate arteriosclerosis from atherosclerosis. How will you know if someone is experiencing stroke? Can you suggest ways to prevent this non-communicable disease?

Activity: ACT ME OUT DIRECTION: The class will be grouped, each group should have 3 members. Each group will be given a particular type of NCD that they will reenact in front of the class with duration of 3 minutes. List of NCDs for each group: 1. Asthma 2. Diabetes 3. Cardiovascular diease 4. Renal/Kidney failure 5. Cancer 6. Arthritis 7. Allergy

Picture analysis Describe the situation shown in the picture. Does he/she show any signs of disease? What do you think the non-communicable disease is depicted in the picture? Why? If you were her older brother/sister, how will you feel about her situation? Can you suggest ways to prevent this non-communicable disease? DIRECTION: Each group will be given a certain picture situation about NCD to be analyzed by citing observations guided by the following questions.

Picture analysis GROUP 1 GROUP 2 GROUP 3

Short paragraph composition Photo-collage Poster/slogan making Advocacy materials ASSIGNMENT: FIGHT NCDs ! Direction: Express your ideas based on your interest in how to protect yourself from non-communicable diseases. Present your output in the class. Criteria 5 4 3 2 1 Showed creativity and clear content.           Applied principles and insights were discussed and learned.           Finish work was presentable, and the concept and thought were evident
