ROSALIE D. DE GUZMAN TEACHER

Review of the Previous Lesson: Last time we studied about the different patterns of development in writing paragraphs. Now let us recall them by answering the game “Who Wants to be a Millionaire ?”

MELC: Compare and contrast patterns of written texts across discipline. OBJECTIVES: Identify the pattern of development of given paragraphs. Examine the organization of ideas in a paragraph read. Sequence sentences to form a well-organized paragraph.

PRELIMINARY ACTIVITY: The class is divided into two groups. Each group is given set of sentences that they need to arrange to form a well-organized paragraph. After organizing the sentences, identify the pattern of development of the given paragraph. You are given 5 minutes to collaborate with one another and arrive at an answer .

PATTERNS OF DEVELOPMENT (ORGANIZING YOUR IDEAS IN WRITING A PARAGRAPH)

CLASSIFICATION PARAGRAPH Thesis statement Supporting Details Purpose of Classification/ Conclusion

Sample Text Test questions generally fall into categories, depending on how they are answered: objective and subjective. The first kind, objective questions, have definite right and wrong answers. Multiple choice, matching, and fill-in-the blank questions are objective. Although they can be tricky because of their wording, most students prefer objective questions. Subjective test items, such as short-answer and essay questions, have no single correct answer. There is a range of possible responses. You can make a lucky guess on an objective question, but a subjective question doesn’t offer much hope for a student relying on dumb luck.

DEFINITION PARAGRAPH Thesis statement Supporting Details Restatement of thesis/ Conclusion

Sample Text According to The American Heritage Dictionary, gossip is a trivial rumor of a personal nature, “but this definition makes gossip sound harmless. At first, gossip might not seem so bad. One person tells a second person something about someone, and that second person tells a third person, and so on. The information passes from person to person. However, gossip is much more than just information and rumor. As the rumor continues, it grows and changes. People do not know all the facts, so they add information. Because the potential damage may range from hurt feelings to a lost career, gossip is not simply a “trivial rumor.”

Let us now compare the pattern of development of the two paragraphs. How do we start writing a classification paragraph? How about a definition paragraph? What do we put inside a classification paragraph? How about a definition paragraph? How do we end a classification paragraph? What about a definition paragraph?

BOARDWORK: Let us help one another in identifying the parts of the paragraphs you arranged earlier.

GROUP ACTIVITY: Teacher will flash different paragraphs or parts of paragraph. Each group will analyze the given texts to identify what pattern of development is used or what part of paragraph it is. The group with the highest score wins the game.

1. What is cholera? Cholera is an intestinal infection that can be described according to its cause, symptoms, and treatment. Cholera is caused by a bacterium, called Vibrio cholera. Contaminated food, water, or feces can result in the rapid spread of this disease. Patients who been exposed to the disease may exhibit mild to extreme symptoms.

2. A drink may be classified according to whether or not it contains alcohol. There are two types of drinks: alcoholic and non-alcoholic. Alcoholic drinks are spirits, wine, and beer. Non-alcoholic drinks may be sub-divided into hot drinks and cold drinks. Hot drinks include tea, juice and coffee.

3. A gene is a chemical unit of atomic proportions buried in every living cell. It determines the structure of an organism. It is capable of self-production and is inheritable. The gene develops as the determinants of life, in all probability, in the long beginnings of Pre-Cambrian simplicity, but genes are required to handle the complexities of higher animals.

4. Gym goers are either sweaty fanatics, fashionistas , busybodies, and fit formals. Above is an example of what part of a paragraph?

5. They come to the gym to work out, stay healthy and go home, but they remember that basic good manners apply in every setting. This could be what part of a paragraph?

6. Assertiveness means standing up for your rights ---politely, but firmly. This could be a topic sentence for what type of paragraph?

APPLICATION : On a ¼ sheet of paper, arrange the following sentences to arrive at a well-organized paragraph. Then, identify the pattern of development used. Write only the number sequence.   1. The IAU has so far recognized five dwarf planets differentiated from planets by a parameter of “planetary discriminant” which allows estimating the capacity to dominate orbits. 2. Simultaneously, they always circulate the sun and no other celestial objects (they are not satellites ). 3 . According to Nation Master Encyclopedia, dwarf planets are referred as planets that follow orbits which are not free from other minor celestial bodies . 4. Several dwarf planets have already been scrutinized effectively. 5. Since current data may not be entirely accurate, further examinations are undertaken by astronomers and physicists world-wide. 6. Their physical properties have been calculated through routine Earth-based observations as well as advanced image-searching software.
