Definition-Course A course is defined as a complete series of studies leading to graduation or a degree Eg . In the case Basic Bsc Nursing Course requiring completion of several short courses It is the separate units of instruction in a subject made up of lectures and classes Eg . A course in anatomy and fundamentals of Nursing
Purpose of course Planning To keep each unit linked to the previous learning made by the students To bring in more unity and cohesion in what is being learnt.
Who does the planning Both the teacher and the students together in order to stimulate the interest of the students, to motivate them, to get their co-operation etc..
Principles of course outline planning State the objectives in behavioual terms which are to achieved. Establish Sequence; arrange the content according to the learning experiences, from simple to complex, Known to unknown and whole to part. Ensure logical and psychological continuity Focus on the students -adopt it to the level of students
Cater to the individual differences of the students Encourage logical memory and problem solving Combine logical and psychological requirements inorder help the teacher ----- Organize content into fewer units ----- Helps the students to develop easy understanding of important concepts
------ Avoid repetitions Eg ; Balance diet 4. Provide cumulative learning; Provide reinforcement by continuing the use of those concepts and activities Eg ; Fundamentals of Nursing to medical surgical nursing
5. Plan for Integration; Plan the related course horizontally. Eg ; Related lessons in midwifery and community should be planned together .
Combine closely relate subjects; Eg . Midwifery and Gynaecological nursing Select an approach acceptable to all teachers Provide variety in modes of learning eg ; Group discussions. Independent study modules, problem solving approaches etc..
Content of a Course plan/outline/ elements Mention the objectives to be achieved through the course. These may be the central objectives of all units in the course which may lead to the attainment of the general objective of the course
2)Hours Mention clearly the number of hours for practical and theoretical experience.
3)Specification of the level the learner The stated objectives should be according to the level of the learners . This will include information regarding the level(yr) of the student, pre- reqisits for the course
4) Course description It describes the general purpose of the course
5)Mention the placement of the course For example for a Bsc Nsg programme OBG is placed in the 4 th year.
6) Resource material needed for the course The teacher who prepare the course outline will be guided by the content
7) Unit plans Organize the content into appropriate units
8) Teaching learning activities Describe the method of teaching and the various learning activities included in the plan
9) Evaluation measures It should include evaluation methods to be used for learning of students and to measure the learning outcomes. More than one type of evaluation methods should be used.
Include place, length of experience, experience record, observations procedures, plan for rotation and cliniical teaching, supervised and guided practice.
