Success Criteria; T1 - To identify the stages of the Creation Story T2 - To explain what is meant by ex nihilo T3 - To evaluate how each person of the Trinity was present in creation Key words: Creation - the act by which God brought the universe into being The Word - term used at the beginning of John’s Gospel to refer to God the Son Ex nihilo - The idea that God created the world ‘out of nothing.’ (Latin) What is the creation story ?

The Book of Genesis Genesis is the first book of the Bible. Genesis 1 describes the creation of the heavens and the earth, while Genesis 2 focuses on the creation of the first humans,  Adam and Eve : Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being. (Genesis 2:7) Genesis 1 explains how: God is the only creator. God existed before he created the world. The world was well planned and is sustained by God. God blessed creation; all creation is  holy . God created everything in Heaven and on Earth in six days. On the seventh day, God rested. To explore d ifferent Christian beliefs about creation including the role of Word and Spirit (John 1:1-3 and Genesis 1:1-3).

The Genesis account of creation Day   Brief summary of what happened Small quote from that day 1 The Earth was empty and God made light and day ‘Let there be light,” and there was light’ 2 3 4 5 6 7     It is  important  that you know the Creation story is in Genesis 1 in the Bible . A question could ask you about Genesis 1! In 2019 there was a four-mark exam question that asked 'Explain two religious beliefs about Genesis 1' Task – Complete the table, giving a brief summary of what happened on each day and then a small quote to support that. To explore d ifferent Christian beliefs about creation including the role of Word and Spirit (John 1:1-3 and Genesis 1:1-3).

God’s attitude to what he made (Genesis 1) Day 6 Fish, reptiles, Birds Sun, moon, stars Dry land, plants The sky Light, darkness Man, animals Day 5 Day 4 Day 3 Day 2 Day 1 Humans are at the top and made in God’s ‘image and likeness’ Task 1 : What does this mean? If humans are made in Gods image and likeness this means… Task 2 : If humans are at the top of creation, what might be their role and responsibility? Human role and responsibility is..

Ex nihilo Ex nihilo translates to ‘out of nothing’. The idea that God created the world ex nihilo means God created the world out of nothing, demonstrating his omnipotence. Task – Use this model to explore this key word. Making something out of nothing. Christians use this to explain that God created the Earth from nothing. God the Father Omnipotent Eternal God is omnipotent. He is the most powerful. God is self-existing (he is the first to exist) He is eternal. Nothing existed before God. He brought everything into existence. To explore d ifferent Christian beliefs about creation including the role of Word and Spirit (John 1:1-3 and Genesis 1:1-3).

Creation and the Trinity The belief that God created the world and still continues to create new life today, is central to Christianity . Even though God is referred to as the ‘Creator’ – we can see the role of the Trinity in the world today ‘The Spirit God’ – this reinforces the idea that the Trinity is the Oneness of God that work together. It also shows that the Trinity and God have existed since the beginning of time. “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. And God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light.” .” Genesis 1:1-3 [NIV] To explore d ifferent Christian beliefs about creation including the role of Word and Spirit (John 1:1-3 and Genesis 1:1-3).

Creation and the Trinity No one knows when Genesis 1 was written but it believed to be around 500bc Around 600 years later in the New Testament in Johns Gospel, he begins with this passage: The ‘ Word’ here is referring to Jesus, the Son: In the beginning was Jesus, and Jesus was with God and Jesus was God This shows that not only was the Holy Spirit was involved in Creation, but the Son too. “ In the beginning was the Word , and the Word was with God , and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made ; without him nothing was made that has been made.” John 1:1-3 [NIV] To explore d ifferent Christian beliefs about creation including the role of Word and Spirit (John 1:1-3 and Genesis 1:1-3).

Task 1. Highlight any information which tells you about Genesis 1 e.g., what it is about, what it describes and why it is important 2. Go through the three different interpretations of the Genesis 1 creation story. Discuss whether or not they seem reasonable to you. Explain your answer.

Not all Christians agree about the creation story. Here are different groups that disagree on the creation story. Task Match the groups to the description of what they believe. (The first two are already completed). EXT – Is it a problem that all Christians don’t agree about the story of creation? To explore d ifferent Christian beliefs about creation including the role of Word and Spirit (John 1:1-3 and Genesis 1:1-3).

LO: To explore the Oneness of God and the Trinity and Christian beliefs about creation

The Trinity in creation Quote How does this show each part of the Trinity was present in creation? “We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty maker of heaven and earth.” The Nicene Creed   “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the Beginning. Through him all things were made.” St John’s Gospel   “Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the face of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters”. Genesis 1:2   Challenge – Explain how each quote demonstrates that each person of the Trinity was present in creation More challenging- Using the 3 quotes, explain how the Creation story shows the Trinity at work and how they link together. You will need to work independent of the teacher You cannot ask questions once the clock appears You will need to work in green pen You will work in silence You have 10 minutes
