2. GRAFFITI is a form of artistic expression done by writing and or drawing on a wall space without permission for public view. What is Graffiti Art?

4. Graffiti can be understood as antisocial behaviour performed in order to gain attention or as a form of thrill seeking, but it also can be understood as an expressive art form. Graffiti Derived from the Italian word  graffio  (“scratch”), graffiti (“incised inscriptions,” plural but often used as singular) has a long history. What is Graffiti Art ( Cont’d )? Graffiti comes from the Italian word  graffiato  which means “to scratch”. It also originates from the Greek word ‘ grapheim ” which means “to write. Graffiti is the term used in Art history to describe works of Art produced by scratching a design into a surface. Graffiti is also defined as writing or drawings scribbled, scratched, or sprayed illicitly on a wall or other surface in a public place.

5. Brief History of Graffiti Art? Although graffiti is generally considered to be a contemporary artform, it actually originated thousands of years ago. The earliest examples are things like cave paintings and inscriptions on ancient buildings in Egypt, Greece and the Roman Empire, with the word ‘graffiti’ itself stemming from the Italian word  graffiato , meaning ‘scratched’. Yet as the art form has evolved, so have the connotations surrounding it, and at present, turning walls into canvases remains nothing more than vandalism according to US law. GRAFFITI is considered to be a contemporary artform. However it actually originated thousands of yeas ago. 6. Graffiti as an art form has evolved over the years For a long time it was associated with vandalism and was seen as an illegal act throughout the world. 7. Around the world Graffiti become prominent in the late 20 th Century. Large elaborate multicoloured graffiti art created with spray paint on building walls and subway cars came to define the urban landscape. It was seen as a self expression by artists who functioned outside traditional galleries. Artists such as Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat became well known for their graffiti works and soon gained recognition by top Art galleries in New York. Graffiti . Graffiti art has its origins in 1970s New York, when young people began to use spray paint and other materials to create images on buildings and on the sides of subway trains. 8. Types of Graffiti Art Lettering? 1. TAG Tagging  is the easiest and simplest style of graffiti; I t includes one colour and the artist's name or identifier.  Taggers  are using graffiti for fame and notoriety. Their objective is to get their crew (group) name and or their individual moniker up on buildings, signs, walls, etc. ... The more locations that they tag their  graffiti  on or the more difficult the location to remove their tags, the more fame and recognition they receive. Hence, tagging is considered as a very simple form of graffiti. It is considered disrespectful to write a tag over another artist's tag or work. Tagging   is the easiest , simplest and most prevalent style of graffiti . I t includes one colour and the artist's name or identifier.  Taggers  are using graffiti for fame and notoriety. 9. Types of Graffiti Art Letters( Cont’d ) 2. THROW UP or A BOMB T hrow up style is a simple version of a tag. It consists of a one colour outline   and one layer of colour filling the letters. THROW UP STYLE: This style consists of one colour outline and one layer of fill colour. Throw ups are designed to be quick to keep the artist from attracting attention. a simple version of a tag that takes a bit longer to perform . There is no negative space inside the letters and only one or two colors if you do not bomb . . Bomb,  to - To cover in graffiti . ... Most often, to cover with tags. Buff, to - To clean off graffiti using chemicals or by painting over. Cans - Spray-paint cans. This style consists of one colour outline and one layer of colour filling in the letters. They are designed to be done quickly to keep the artist from attracting attention. There is no negative space inside the letters.

10. Types of Graffiti Art ( Cont’d ) 3. BLOCKBUSTER They are designed using roller brushes to get the angles and which makes them faster and easier to do. Block style letters used to cover large areas/spaces in a small amount of time.

11. Types of Graffiti Art ( Cont’d ) 4. WILDSTYLE An elaborate version of a throw-up and Blockbuster style. This style is visually appealing – it is colourful, the letters interlock and decorated with arrows, spikes, curves and other decorative elements. The highly stylized design often makes it difficult to read. Wildstyle is an elaborate version of a throw-up and is particularly hard to read. Wildstyle often consists of arrows, curves, spikes and other things that non graffiti artists might not understand. This is the more elaborate take on a Blockbuster. Whilst it is visually very appealing, the convoluted and interlocked letters, arrows, spikes and other decorative elements merge into one another, often making it difficult to work out what has been written

HEAVEN / HEAVEN STYLE Graffiti style letters and artwork that are placed in areas very difficult to get to for example tops of buildings, under bridges, roofs etc.. They are designed using roller brushes to get the angles and which makes them faster and easier to do. The aptly named Heaven style refers to artworks that have been placed somewhere very difficult to get to e.g. tops of buildings, bridges, roofs etc. Artists who manage this gain credibility from their peers.

13. Types of Graffiti Art ( Cont’d ) 6. STENCIL STYLE The form of graffiti created using stencils made from paper or cardboard to create an image or text that is easily reproduced. The desired design is cut out and the image is transferred onto the surface using spray paint or roll-on paint. The infamous Banksy gained notoriety for his fondness of the stencil style. Stencil is a form of  graffiti  that makes use of stencils made out of paper, cardboard, or other media to create an image or text that is easily reproducible. The desired design is cut out of the selected medium and then the image is transferred to a surface through the use of spray paint or roll-on paint.  Banksy was a famous graffiti artist known for the stencil style.

14. Types of Graffiti Art ( Cont’d ) 7. POSTER/PASTE UP Block style letters used to cover large areas/spaces in a small amount of time. Posters are made previously and then pasted up easily and quickly. They were made at home and then taken to the location and pasted up quickly.

They are designed using roller brushes to get the angles and which makes them faster and easier to do. Stickers are similar to posters but smaller in size and easily stuck to the walls.
