DasmaSIpag DasmaGAling DasmaSIgla It has often been said that literature is a reflection of the society and vice-versa. It is because what man writes is a mirror of his thoughts, emotions, and situations around him. Thus, writing in its creative form has been an integral part of man’s history and survival. Man expresses himself artistically through writing and it preserves his experiences and learnings.
DasmaSIpag DasmaGAling DasmaSIgla Writing has served man many purposes. Most of the time, we write because we have a message to share. Writing is also often found to be therapeutic or has healing effects. (So if you are feeling anxious about the happenings in general, you may want to grab a pen and write about some things).
DasmaSIpag DasmaGAling DasmaSIgla But how do we write stories? We have to begin at some point and that is perhaps by identifying things that we want to write about. If you find it hard to write, don’t worry because the words will just come to you. Writing is a creative process, and sometimes we cannot force the words to come to us.
DasmaSIpag DasmaGAling DasmaSIgla Sometimes, we need a space or a certain mood before we write. In olden times, they believe that we have to be divinely inspired (that means taking content from divinities) in order to write. In Philippine folklore, we call our inspiration “ Paraluman ” or a muse that inspires us to do creative stuff.

DasmaSIpag DasmaGAling DasmaSIgla Primarily, creative writing differs from other forms of writing because of the style in which it is written. It requires a great deal of skills to write creatively. The creative process of writing also differs from one writer to another because style is something personal.

DasmaSIpag DasmaGAling DasmaSIgla Imagery In creative writing, you will be making a lot of descriptions. The descriptive details are necessary to make your writing clear because they help generate a specific mood or emotion. They are called images and sensory impressions. We commonly know these as imagery. Imagery is a form of figurative/implied language that uses objects, actions and ideas in such a way that it appeals to the senses. It is usually associated with mental pictures or images formed in our minds.
DasmaSIpag DasmaGAling DasmaSIgla F ive (5) Basic T ypes of Imagery Visual Imagery appeals to the sense of sight. It is something that is concrete and can be seen. Example: It was dark and dim in the forest. Auditory Imagery appeals to the sense of hearing. It is something that you can hear through your mind’s ears. Example: The pattering of the rain is heard against the window pane.
DasmaSIpag DasmaGAling DasmaSIgla Olfactory Imagery appeals to the sense of smell. It is something that you can smell through your mind’s nose. Example: The stench of body odor in a crowded LRT seeped through the fabric of my shirt. Gustatory Imagery appeals to the sense of taste. It is something that you can taste through your mind’s tongue. Example: Mouth-watering ripe mangoes, tender melons, and luscious cherries are served on a tray.
DasmaSIpag DasmaGAling DasmaSIgla Tactile Imagery appeals to the sense of touch. It is something that you can touch through your mind’s skin. Example: The soft velvety feel of silk and satin caressed my skin.
DasmaSIpag DasmaGAling DasmaSIgla Diction Diction in writing means the choice of words as we write. The words that a writer use determine his or her style in writing. Style is personal by nature because it is like the author’s brand or distinction among all other writers. Some write in a very formal manner while some write like just having a conversation with a friend. Diction kind of distinguishes the work of the writer from the others.
DasmaSIpag DasmaGAling DasmaSIgla Figurative Language Creative writing usually uses a language that is not literary taken. This is called figurative language which goes beyond the literal meaning of what is said or written. It usually makes writing more experiential, rich and vivid. Figurative language is also known as metaphorical language as it lives on comparisons that takes images in our minds making us feel and see things differently.
DasmaSIpag DasmaGAling DasmaSIgla The most common figures of speech are the following: Simile Metaphor Personification Irony Allusion Symbols
DasmaSIpag DasmaGAling DasmaSIgla Personal Experiences Another vital aspect in creative writing is the integration of one’s personal experiences in his or her content. Most of us write from our experiences as we have discussed that literature is a mirror that reveals man’s thoughts and emotions. Experience is also necessary for the writer to realistically write about a certain subject.
