4. THE TRAVEL ESSAY Travel writing is the second type of Narrative Essay. Its subject matter is one’s encounter with a foreign place. The writer is describing not only the place but also their experiences while travelling.

5. Travelogue/ travel diary/ journal ( may be the oldest kind of travel literature) these refers to written accounts by specific traveler’s journey’s logged chronologically. A more contemporary form of travel writing is the feature article about travel – it is to showcase places as well as to draw people closer to those locations. 6. The Travel Essay and the Traveler Travel essay is monologue-like – it is a way to voice out a speaker’s experiences as well as thoughts and feelings. The use of different rhetorical modes is clearly necessary (narration, summarization, description, exposition, introspection, recollection, persuasion) The main subject of a travel essay is not the place travelled to, rather the traveler and his or her encounter with that place.

9. Travel as Story Travel essay is like storytelling –it is a form of journey with a beginning, middle and end experienced by a protagonist. Also, we go back to the notions of characters – travel essay has a character, the traveler to be exact.

10. Travel as Story In good travel narratives, there are at least two journeys that we follow: a physical journey and an internal one. Physical Journey – has a beginning, middle and end. Internal One – it is the internal condition and struggles of the traveler while on physical journey; it also has an arc that starts and finishes.

11. Travel as Story The intent of personal narratives about travel is to account for why the traveler went on a journey, what he or she left behind, what he or she seeks to discover in setting out on a journey, how the journey is changing him or her. Travelling also allow self-discovery.

13. Personal essay is the last type of narrative essay. It is liken with the personal story – recollection of memories, but are less concerned with retelling specific memories. The Personal Essay

14. A personal essay is the story that testifies what its author is concerned with or what he or she has newly realized . One foot is firmly planted in the present, and the other foot pivots to one or several points from the past. Ex: (from the textbook) The Personal Essay

15. Reflection -Being able to look at oneself. It proceeds from the willingness to proactively, sometimes painfully, analyze and penetrate experiences What lies beneath and within Reflection and introspection has something to do with the inward movement that the narrator takes while recalling past events. Introspection -examination of one’s own mental and emotional processes, to understand how you make sense and emotionally react to things.
