CYANOCOBALAMIN (Vit.B12) Made By:- Isha Mehta (Roll No.26 )

INTRODUCTION:- Vit.B12 is water-soluble vitamin. Vitamin B12 ( Cyanocobalamin ), is recently discovered as one of the B group. Was isolated from liver fractions in crystalline form in 1948. It was soon shown to be specific for treatment of Addisonian Pernicious Anaemia . It is the extrinsic factor in the prevention of Pernicious Anaemia .

Q. What is Pernicious Anaemia ?

SOURCES:- Vitamin B12 is supplied almost entirely to us by animal foods. The main richest sources are:- Nuts (Almonds, Walnuts) Lean Milk (less than 10 gms of fat) Fish ( mussels ,  mackerel ,  tuna ,  sardines , herring  and other fishes, 75 grams of any of these can easily meet your daily requirement.) Eggs Cheese Vegetables and Fruits do not contain any source of Vit.B12

REQUIREMENT:- The requirement of Cyanocobalamin by man has not been defined accurately but appears to be in very small quantity. It is estimated to be under 1 mg/day.

TOXICITY:- This threshold has not been set for Vit.B12 because our body excretes whatever is excess through URINE. However, excessively high levels of Vit.B12 has some negative side effects like:- Mega doses of this vitamin can lead to outbreaks of Acne & skin condition that causes Redness & Pus filled bumps on the face. People with Diabetic Nephropathy(loss of kidney function due to diabetes) experiences more rapid decline in kidney function. High dose of B-group Vitamins have greater risk of Heart Attack, Stroke & in some cases even Death.
