Cybercrime is a crime that involves a computer and a network. The computer may have been used in the commission of a crime, or it may be the target. Some of them are Identity Theft, Fraud, Phishing Scam . WHAT IS CYBER CRIME ?
The first person to be found guilty of cybercrime and that happened in the year 1981 was Lan Murphy , better known as Captain Zap . He had hacked the American telephone company's internal clock in order to make free calls during peak hours. The first cybercrime occurred in 1992 when the first polymorphic virus was released. The case of Yahoo v. Akash Arora (1999) was one of the earliest examples of cybercrime in India.

The Information Technology act, 2000 (IT Act) came into force on 17 oct 2000. The primary purpose of Act is to provide legal recognition to the transaction done via electronic exchange of data and other electronic means of communication or electronic commerce transactions. It also defines cyber crimes and prescribes penalties for them. Identity thefts and associated cyber frauds are embodied in the Indian Penal Code (IPC), 1860. Cyber crime such as Forgery, False documentations, Reputation damage are punishable under IPC . IT ACT 2000 & IPC 1860
In India most of the cyber crime done through social media. The total internet users in India are 560 billion. Cyber crimes such as Threats, Bullying, Harrassing and Stalking other online cases are done through social media. According to NCRB report, during year 2020 most of the cases are form Uttar Pradesh. CURENT TRENDS IN INDIA UP also called cyber capital of India. In India most of the cyber cases are Phising scams, identity theft scams, online harassment, cyber stalking, invasion of privacy. In India total 50,035 cases of cybercrime were registered in 2020.
According to the NCRB report, the crime cases which rose during year 2018, 2019 and 2020 were 27248, 44735 and 50035 respectively. Uttar Pradesh ranked first with 11097 , Karnataka with 10741and Maharashtra with 5496 cases during the year 2020.
Total Offences registered under IT Act during 2020 are 29,643 cases. Computer related offences ,Identity theft, ransom-ware are common cases under IT Act. The cases registered under IT Act are most from Karnataka and UP. Arrested under IT Act: Male =10,910 Female = 149
Total offences under IPC during 2020, are 20201cases. Fraud, Cheating, online banking fraud, ATMs . Most of the cases under IPC registered from Maharashtra and Telangana . Arrested under IPC : Male = 18066 Female = 354
