YASS CYCLONE IN KOLKATA The meteorology department of Sri Lanka issued a red alert on May 24 for the possibility of heavy rains and strong winds from Yaas for the country's Western , Central , Sabaragamuwa and Southern provinces. The maximum wind speed of Yaas is expected to be up to 185 km per hour between 5:30 and 11:30 am along the north Odisha coast as the cyclone approaches the land.
More than 4,500 villages were reported to be damaged. Various rural habitations and agricultural lands took a hit, and basic needs like drinking water, sanitation, etc. were also rendered a scarcity. At least 143 breaches of coastal embankments were reported . Starting on May 25, heavy rains and strong winds started to brush the coastal and inland areas of West Bengal , storms reaching as far as Kolkata . In the latter's Hooghly District , a tornado struck Bandel and killed two people due to electrocution from fallen power lines, while five were injured Knee-deep floods submerged the beach areas of Digha due to torrential rainfall, while palm trees were snapped by gusty winds . YASS CYCLONE IN JHARKHAND RANCHI: Jharkhand on high alert over severe cyclonic storm 'Yaas" has evacuated people from vulnerable areas in East Singhbhum, West Singhbhum and other districts bordering West Bengal and Odisha to safer places while the operation is going on to deal with the crisis Jharkhand is likely to witness squally wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph to 60 kmph on May 26 noon and increase gradually to a wind speed of 110-120 kmph."
