INTRODUCTION TO SPSS Anne Pathiranage

Lecture outline… Background Research startup Analysis Presentation Interpretation

Research Steps

Purpose of data analysis To answer the research questions To determine the trends and relationships among the data. To understand the behaviour To derive several insights

Steps in Data Analysis Before Data Collection :  the researcher should accomplish the following Define the question Determine the method of data analysis Determine how to process the data Consult a statistician Prepare tables After Data Collection Process the data Prepare tables and graphs Analyze and interpret findings Consult again the statistician Prepare for presentation

Types of Analysis Quantitative Data Analysis Qualitative Data Analysis Mix Method

Quantitative Data Analysis Descriptive Analysis Eg : Frequency distribution, Measure of Central tendency , Measures of Variability Inferential Analysis Eg : level of significance, t-test

What is SPSS? Originally it is an acronym “ Statistical Package for the Social Sciences ” but now it stands for Statistical Product and Service Solutions.

History… SPSS has a long heritage Introduced in 1968. Was originally developed to facilitate statistical analysis in the social sciences. Early versions designed to run on mainframe computers. On July 28, 2009 IBM announced it was acquiring SPSS Inc. for $ 1.2 billion in cash The current versions are officially named IBM SPSS Statistics.

Translate the Questionnaire into SPSS Questions in the questionnaire are mapped into variables in SPSS!

Basic Operations in SPSS (Basic Steps In Data Analysis) Variable Entry (adding or deleting a variable) Data Entry (adding or deleting the data) Saving the data Importing data from Excel file Checking the data entered Sorting the data Transforming the data

Reading (opening) the Data Set Data can be obtained in several formats: • SPSS files • Spreadsheet - Excel, Lotus • Database - dbase, paradox • Files from other statistical programs • ASCII text • Complex database formats

In SPSS, go to FILE/OPEN Click on the button “Files of Type” Select the option “SPSS (*.sav)” Click on "Open.”
