O nion is considered the third most valuable vegetable in the world grown in 140 countries over an area of 54.8 lakh hectares with an output of 1045.54 lakh tons. The average productivity of the world is 23.06 tons/ha.

Onion Production by Area per Country: 1. India has the largest area for onion farming in the world, with 14.34 lakh hectares 2. China is second, with 10.9 lakh hectares . 3. Other countries with significant onion farming areas include Nigeria, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sudan, Vietnam, Egypt, Uganda, Myanmar, Turkey, Russia, and Ukraine .

Onion Productivity (Yield per Hectare): 1. The Republic of Korea is the most productive country in terms of onion yield, producing 79.62 tons per hectare . 2. India , despite having the largest area, ranks 83rd in productivity , with only 18.64 tons per hectare . This means India has a lot of land dedicated to onion farming but doesn’t produce as much per hectare as some other countries.

Global Onion Export: In 2020-21, the world exported 83.27 lakh tons of onions , valued at 3,607.67 million USD . Netherlands leads in onion export value, earning 797.42 million USD . India is the 4th largest exporter, exporting 14.49 lakh tons , valued at 346.64 million USD .

Reasons for Lower Productivity in India: Long-day conditions (found in European and American countries) are ideal for onion growth, leading to higher productivity. Tropical and Subtropical countries (like India) mainly grow short-day onions , which naturally yield less. Lack of quality seeds and reliance on farmer-saved seeds contribute to lower yields. Diseases and pests that thrive in tropical climates also reduce productivity. Monsoon variability and water shortages during critical growth stages further impact onion yields in India. Key Takeaways: India is a major player in onion farming by area, but its productivity is lower than many other countries. Challenges like unsuitable climate conditions, lack of quality seeds, and water issues are the main reasons for lower productivity in India. Despite lower productivity, India is still a significant exporter of onions globally.
