Data handling and bar graph Himalyan International school Class VIII ‘B’ Presentation by Sujeet Kumar

Data handling Success Criteria I Can: Self-assessment prior to learning Self-assessment post learning Teacher’s assessment post learning Arrange and interpret the given/collected data in the form of tally marks.       Arrange and interpret the given/collected date in the form of pictograph.       Represent data pictorially in order to interpret data using bar graph       Need support (N) Self-Reflection Rubric: Data handling Learning Intention: To develop an understanding of how to organize, present, interpret and compare data.    Signature of Student: ____________________________Signature of Teacher: ______________________________ Note: Reflections will be on a 5 point scale as follows: Exceptional (E) Secure (S) Achieving = Meeting curriculum standards which are given in the success criteria (A) Working towards (W) NB

L.I : To develop an understanding of how to organize, present, interpret and compare data.    L.O. Arrange and interpret the given/collected data in the form of tally marks . S.C. 1. Draw the tally marks for the given data. 2. Interpret the data using tally marks .

Visual thinking routine Think Connect Extend What is tally chart used for? Write a real life example where tally chart is used. How is tally chart different than other methods of representing data? L.I : To develop an understanding of how to organize, present, interpret and compare data.    L.O. Arrange and interpret the given/collected data in the form of tally marks. S.C. 1. Draw the tally marks for the given data. 2. Interpret the data using tally marks. NB

Sandra wanted to find out the ways in which students travelled to school. She carried out a survey. Her frequency table looked like this: Method of travel Tally Frequency Walk I III IIII IIII IIII IIII III 28 Car IIII IIII II 12 Bus IIII IIII IIII IIII III 23 Bicycle IIII 5 Taxi II 2 By adding together all the frequencies, you can see that 70 students took part in the survey. The frequencies also show you that more students travelled to school on foot than by any other method of transport.

Philip kept a record of the number of goals scored by Burnley Rangers in the last 20 matches. These are his results: 0 1 1 0 2 0 1 3 2 1 0 1 0 3 2 1 0 2 1 1 Draw a frequency table for his data. What was the most frequent score? How many goals were scored in total for the 20 matches?

Number of goals scored Tally Frequency IIII I 6 1 IIII III 8 2 IIII 4 3 II 2 b) The most frequent score was 1. c) The total number of goals scored was 22.

Draw the tally marks for the given data. 2. Interpret the data using tally marks. TASK SHEET Task 2: 40 children of grade VI voted for the monitor of class. On counting the votes the following results were obtained. Put tally mark for each vote in the given table. Amy, David, Amelia, Sam, Gary, Gary, David, Amy, Amelia, Amelia, Sam, David, Sam, Gary, Amy, Amelia, Amelia, Gary, Amy, Sam, David, Amelia, Amy, Amy, Sam, Sam, Gary, David, Amelia, Amy, David, David, David, Gary, Amelia, Amelia, Amy, Sam, Sam, Amelia   Draw a tally chart and fill the data. Task 1: The marks scored (out of 20) in a unit test are as follows. Task 3: Record the data of the student using own transport, school bus or Walk to reach school. Create a Tally chart. Write 2 questions based on your char. Number of girls, Number of the boys, Number of tables NB

EXTRA PRACTICE

L.I : To develop an understanding of how to organize, present, interpret and compare data.    L.O. Arrange and interpret the given/collected data in the form of pictograph . S.C. 1. Draw the pictograph for the given data. 2. Interpret the data using tally marks .

L.O. Arrange and interpret the given/collected data in the form of pictograph . Q1 Estimate how much Sheena collected. How much did Gary and Pip collected together? Let’s Think NB

L.I : To develop an understanding of how to organize, present, interpret and compare data.    L.O. Represent data pictorially in order to interpret data using bar graph. S.C. 1. Draw the BAR GRAPH for the given data. 2. Interpret the data using THE BAR GRAPH .

A bar chart consists of a series of bars or blocks of the same width, drawn either vertically or horizontally from an axis . The heights or lengths of the bars always represent frequencies. Sometimes, the bars are separated by narrow gaps or equal width, which makes the chart easier to read. L.O. Represent data pictorially in order to interpret data using bar graph.

Bargraph NB

For her survey on fitness, Maureen asked a sample of people, as they left a sports centre, which activity they had taken part in. She then drew a bar chart to show her data. Which was the most popular activity? How many people took part in Maureen’s survey? Give a probable reason why fewer people took part in weight training than in any other activity. Is a sports centre a good place in which to do a survey on fitness? Explain why. Task 1 NB

Task 2 L.O. Represent data pictorially in order to interpret data using bar graph. NB

The bar chart shows the average daily temperatures, in degrees Celsius, in England and Scotland. Derek says that the graph shows that the temperature in England is always more than double the temperature in Scotland. Explain why Derek is wrong. NB

HOTS…………….. NB

Conduct a survey to find the colours of cars that pass your home. Draw pictograms and bar charts to illustrate your data. Compare your results with someone’s else and comment on any conclusions you can draw concerning the colours of cars in your area. CHALLENGE NB
