DAY 10E Rev. 3:14-22 The Church of Laodicea Part 5 Pastor Mark Schwarzbauer, Ph.D.
This is my Bible. It is the incomparable, inerrant, authoritative Word of God. I am what it says I am. I can do what it says I can do. I have what it says I have. I choose to live as it calls me to live. I am open and ready to receive from God’s living Word. DAY 10E Rev. 3:14-22

Verses 17-18 Revealed Who YOU really are The Amen (Ultimate Truth) calls us away from self-deception. We must see our need for the Savior. We are counseled to do business: replace the current culture with the culture of Christ. DAY 10E Rev. 3:14-22

Verse 20 Defines The Relationship He Really Wants DAY 10E Rev. 3:14-22
Genesis and Revelation The Book of Revelation is filled with Jewish references and context. Revelation includes the restoration of what was lost in Genesis. DAY 10E Rev. 3:14-22
Genesis and Revelation Genesis is the beginning. Revelation is the ending. Genesis records how paradise is lost. In Revelation, paradise is restored. DAY 10E Rev. 3:14-22
Genesis and Revelation Genesis is the story of creation. Revelation is the restoration by the creator. DAY 10E Rev. 3:14-22
Genesis and Revelation Genesis records the entrance of sin. Revelation records the final judgment of sin. DAY 10E Rev. 3:14-22
Genesis and Revelation In Genesis, death enters the world. In Revelation, death is destroyed. In Genesis, the Redeemer is promised. In Revelation, the Redeemer reigns. DAY 10E Rev. 3:14-22
Genesis and Revelation The relationship He wants is found in the Jewish Messiah DAY 10E Rev. 3:14-22
Genesis and Revelation To bring the Messiah into the world, God established a special relationship with His people, Israel, the chosen people. DAY 10E Rev. 3:14-22
Genesis and Revelation Throughout the Old and New Testaments, God used the marriage relationship as a metaphor for the closeness of The Relationship He Really Wants. DAY 10E Rev. 3:14-22
V. 20 “Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me.” DAY 10E Rev. 3:14-22
V. 20 Whom it is written for… Verse 20 is often quoted for evangelism work. The application to the unbeliever is still appropriate. However, the verse is not being spoken for unbelievers; it is being spoken to the church! DAY 10E Rev. 3:14-22
The Context of V. 20 Lifting this verse out of the literary context of v. 19 causes it to lose significant meaning. The context of v. 19 asserts that the entire motivation is love. DAY 10E Rev. 3:14-22
The Original SOURCE of V. 20 The verse is actually a picture from The Song of Solomon 5:2 . In this passage, the bridegroom knocks on the bride's door. DAY 10E Rev. 3:14-22
The Changed Perspective of V. 20 However, the Song of Solomon shares this from the bride’s perspective . Jesus reverses this viewpoint and shares it from the bridegroom's perspective .
The Beautiful Twist of V. 20 This beautiful twist would catch the attention of the Hebrew Christians. The opening “Behold” is designed to do just that. DAY 10E Rev. 3:14-22
The Finale of V. 20 The literary play on Song of Solomon 5:2 is further reinforced in Revelation 19:6-9 at the Marriage Supper of the Lamb as Jesus also refers to “dine.” DAY 10E Rev. 3:14-22
The Hidden Beauty of V. 20 Another beautiful facet of this verse is Jesus’ pursuit. He said, “I stand at the door and knock.” He is not forcing His way in or demanding His way. Opening the door is a choice; there is “no irresistible grace.” DAY 10E Rev. 3:14-22
The Knocking in V. 20 The word for “knock” is κρούω ( krouō ), which means rapping with knuckles, not pounding. The picture is a loving call of opportunity as HE PURSUES US! (Jeremiah 31:3). DAY 10E Rev. 3:14-22
V. 20’s Pronouns Jesus uses four pronouns in this verse: “I,” “My,” “I,” and “Me.” He also uses four pronouns to refer to the person inside the door: “anyone,” “him,” “him,” and “he.” DAY 10E Rev. 3:14-22
V. 20’s Pronouns All four of these pronouns referring to others are in the SINGULAR . Jesus is calling for individuals to open up to Him. DAY 10E Rev. 3:14-22
“I will come in to him” To come into him means that Christ enters their heart, not literally, but their affection and devotion are directed to Jesus in a covenant relationship. DAY 10E Rev. 3:14-22
V. 20 The Salt Covenant The meal covenant, or The Covenant of Salt. Lev. 2:13, Numbers 18:19, II Chron. 13:5. To “dine with him, and he with me” describes the mutual sharing of the meal/salt covenant. DAY 10E Rev. 3:14-22
V. 20 The Salt Covenant The meal/salt covenant seals lifetime friendship with a commitment to (1) come to each other's aid, (2) mutually share in need, and (3) never lie to each other. DAY 10E Rev. 3:14-22
V. 20 The Salt Covenant The salt covenant is combined with the blood covenant in Passover and Holy Communion. DAY 10E Rev. 3:14-22
