Worthy is the Lamb ~ Revelation 5 Pastor Mark Schwarzbauer, Ph.D.

This is my Bible. It is the incomparable, inerrant, authoritative Word of God. I am what it says I am. I can do what it says I can do. I have what it says I have. I choose to live as it calls me to live. I am open and ready to receive from God’s living Word.

TEXT Revelation 5:1-14

Revelation 5:1 The scroll is the title deed to planet Earth with the complete rights of execution (setting up the events of the Great Tribulation).

Revelation 5:1 In historical context, ancient land ownership was understood as all the land was exclusively owned by either the monarchy or the gods. Individual rights were limited and utterly subject to divine or monarchial ownership.

Revelation 5:1 The scroll “written inside and on the back” is filled with details and legal authority. Psalm 24:1 “The earth is the Lord’s and everything therein.”

Revelation 5:1 God has full rights to execute all the following judgments in the Great Tribulation.

Revelation 5:1 There will be those who declare, “How dare you, God?” The expression “How dare you” questions someone's actions and/or authority.

Revelation 5:1 During the Great Tribulation, people on Earth defy God, condemn His judgments, which are the only consequences of their behaviors, and question His authority.

Revelation 5:2-4 V. 2-4 Who is worthy to open the scroll? Jesus is worthy to open AND loose its seals, thereby releasing the judgment that follows.

Revelation 5:2-4 The seventh seal releases seven trumpet judgments. The seventh trumpet judgment releases the seven bowl judgments.

Revelation 5:2-4 The one who received the judgment of God for sin on Himself, at the cross, has the authority to release judgment on those who have persecuted His church and rejected His Lordship.

Revelation 5:5-7 The Revelation of who Jesus is now includes the Lion of the Tribe of Judah the Root of David. He is also the Lamb who was Slain. Jesus still has the scars!

Revelation 5:5-7 Slain but ALIVE! Resurrected in power and authority. John is describing Jesus as he knew him, not saying Jesus looked like a literal lamb.

Revelation 5:5-7 John was a disciple of John the Baptist and heard John describe Jesus as “Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world.” John 1:29. Exodus 12:1-13.

Revelation 5:5-7 The phrase “seven horns” is a Hebrew expression of complete strength and authority.

Revelation 5:5-7 The “seven eyes” are the Holy Spirit or “seven-fold Spirit of God.” This reveals Jesus’ continuing relationship and dependency on the Holy Spirit.

Revelation 5:5-7 Why is John using this figurative language?

Revelation 5:5-7 He is Jewish, writing about the Jewish Messiah, referencing Jewish Scripture and using Jewish phraseology. The figurative language helps us focus on the deep meaning here.

Revelation 5:5-7 Jesus takes the scroll from Father. Once again, we see One-God eternally existing as three-persons.

Revelation 5:8-10 V. 8-10 The worship of the Lamb Jesus takes the title deed and all of heaven begins to worship. He is worthy because He was slain and redeemed us by His blood.

Revelation 5:8-10 “Out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation” reveals they are leading the worship of all the redeemed now in heaven after the Rapture.

Revelation 5:8-10 “Made us kings and priests to our God,” Martin Luther called this “the priesthood of all believers.”

Revelation 5:11-14 V. 11-14 “Then I looked, and I heard.” Forty-four times in Revelation he declares that he saw something, and twenty-seven times he says, “I heard.” A first-hand account.

Revelation 5:11-14 The voices of all the believers joining in worship of the Lamb. All of creation joins in. Romans 8:19-22.
