Anactfromwhichwefeelguiltyisnormallycalleda“sin.”Itis
therupturingtherelationshipthatGodbroughtusintotheworldwith:
theimageandlikenessofGod.Weareallmadeintheimageand
likenessofourcreator.TreatingeachotherinwaysthatarenotofGod,
isturningourbacksonGodascreator,andonothersasour
brothers/sisters.
JesusforgaveusonceandforallattheCross:“Father,forgive
themfortheyknownotwhattheydo.”However,westillneedto
reconcilewithGodbyreconcilingwithourharmedbrothers/sisters.It
isdoneinaprivateroominthepresenceofChrist’spriest.
Itwasnotpracticedaswedoittodayuntilthe13

Century.St.
ThomasAquinascoinedit“Penance”asanencounterwithGod’s
forgivingandredeeminggrace.
Itsmainpurposeistohelpusconvertourlivesfromonethat
letsourselvesbetakeninvice,toonethatlivesvirtuously.

5centuries,onlythoseinthecommunitydesignated
tobehealers,couldadministerthissacrament.Thewholebodywas
anointed.AsanecclesialriteoftheChurch,itdidnotexistuntilthe9

C.Lateritwascalled“extremeunction,”meaningthatonehadtobe
onone’sdeathbedtoreceiveit.
Itwasasourceofmuchfear,whenaverysickpersonwouldbe
visitedbythepriest.Itmeanthe/shewasdying.Itwasthoughttobe
“LastRites,”untiltheVaticanIICouncil.Inmanycircles,it’sstill
considered“lastrites.”

Marriage
WhenJesusspokeofhimself,hewouldrefertohimselfasthe
groom.TheChurchwashisbride.Hewouldspeakoftheloveofa
husbandandwifeasequivalenttothelovehehadforhiscommunity.
Itistheonlysacramentthatisnotadministeredbythepriest.It
isadministeredbythecouple.Whatissacramentalistheir“Consent,”
whichiswhatmanycallthe‘maritalvows.’
SacramentalConsentmeansthreethings:
1.Thecoupleisfreeandcomeswithoutreservation;
2.Thecouplepromisesfidelity(faithfulness)untildeath;
3.ThecoupleisopentoreceivechildrenandraisethemasCatholic.
ForMarriagetobeirrevocablemeansthattheConsentanswers“yes”
tothe3questionsabove.Otherwiseitis“annullable”ornon-
sacramental.

ThemodernideaofOrdersspeaksofthreepositions:the
diaconate(deacon),thepresbyter(priest),+theepiscopate(bishop).
Theoriginaldeaconswerebornoutofnecessityfromthe
apostles.Marriedmenofhighqualitywerecalled,hadhandsimposed
onthem,andtheybecametheoriginal“PermanentDeacons”inthe1

C.TheywerecalledtoservetheGreekorphansandwidows,whowere
beingneglectedbytheJewishconverts.Yes,racialprejudiceexisted
evenintheearlyChurch.
Later,thediaconatebecame“transitional,”inthattheywerea
stepjustbeforebeingordainedpriests.Hence:TransitionalDeacons.It
tookVat.IItobringbackthevocationofthePermanentDeacon.
PriestswereassignedbytheirBishopstoservethechurches
foundedbytheBishops.Thesewerelatercalledparishes.Bishopswere
itinerantwithintheirjurisdiction.
