OBJECTIVES Presentation title Define CBRN Contamination Sources of Contamination Types of Contamination & exposure Decon & it’s principles 6 Attributes of Decontaminants Procedure of Decon

CONTAMINATION 7 Presence of Haz materials from the categories of Chemical, Biological, Radiological and nuclear substances where their presence is unintended or undesirable.

SOURCES 8 Chemical Contamination Industrial Accident Transportation Accident Chemical Warfare Radiological Contamination NPP Industrial Radiography Radiological Warfare Biological Contamination Disease Outbreaks Biological Warfare Laboratory Accident Nuclear Contamination Nuclear weapons testing Nuclear Accidents Radiological Warfare Cross Contamination Improper Handling Inadequate Decon

TYPES OF CONTAMN DEPOSITION External Presence of Haz Mat on outer surface of body Individual or Objects come into contact with radioactive substance Can occur due to radioactive fallout 9 Internal Radioactive mat are absorbed inhaled or ingested Internal rad exposure

TYPES OF CONTAMN (TRANSMISSION) PRIMARY CONTAMINATION Direct Release: Refers to the initial source of radioactive material entering the environment. This can be: Nuclear accidents:  Like Chernobyl or Fukushima, where radioactive materials are released from damaged reactors. Nuclear weapon detonation:  Fallout from a nuclear bomb explosion spreads radioactive dust and debris over a large area. Medical procedures:  Radioactive isotopes used in some medical treatments can leave trace amounts of contamination in waste materials. Industrial processes:  Certain industrial activities, like mining or uranium processing, can release radioactive materials. 11

TYPES OF CONTAMN (TRANSMISSION) SECONDARY CONTAMINATION Secondary contamination refers to the movement or transformation of the initial radioactive material released during primary contamination. Mechanisms of Spread: Secondary contamination can occur through various means: Wind and water:  Air currents and water flow can carry radioactive dust and particles to new areas, expanding the contaminated zone. Tracking:  People and animals can unknowingly carry radioactive material on their clothes, shoes, or fur, contaminating new areas. Erosion:  Wind and rain can erode contaminated soil, spreading the radioactive material further. 12

Presentation title 13

CONTAMINATION vs EXPOSURE CONTAMINATION EXPOSURE 14 Refers to the presence of radioactive materials in an unwanted location. Can be external or internal:  Contamination can be on your skin, clothes, or in the environment (external). It can also be inside your body if you ingest, inhale, or absorb radioactive material (internal). Refers to the absorption of ionizing radiation emitted by radioactive materials. This radiation can damage cells and tissues, leading to health effects Can come from internal or external sources:  You can be exposed to radiation from external sources like contaminated areas or from internal sources if you have radioactive material inside your body from contamination.

EFFECTS OF CONTAMN ACUTE RADIATION SICKNESS LONG TERM HEALTH EFFECTS ENV IMPACT ECONOMIC DISRUPTION 15

DECON DEFINITION Removing Radioactive material from a person, object or place where it is not desired is called decon 16

PRINCIPLES OF DECON 17 REMOVE Remove source of Contamination as soon as possible REDUCE Reduce exposure to the victims Prevent further spread of Haz mat or substance PREVENT MINIMISE Minimise risk of secondary contamination

ATTRIBUTES OF DECONTAMINANTS 18 Specificity Rapid Action Broad Spectrum Safety for Humans Ease of Use Cheap/Cost Effective Long Shelf Life Non Corrosive & Non Damaging to surfaces
