About This Presentation

It is a good presentation for general knowledge of cbrn.becox in this era everyone should know about the cbrn emergency.it help many people in India and the world .in India people have less knowledge about the cbrn which is not good .there is a new hidden enemy in the name of cbrn

DECONTAMINATION CONCEPTS AND PRINCIPLES

Physically screen off the CW Agents to avoid
damage
Physically removal of CW agents by
Absorption, washing or evaporation .
Destroy CW Agents by chemically modifying
them .
PRINCIPLE OF DECON.

TYPE OF DECONTAMINTION

MECHANICAL
DECONTAMINATION
SimplestMethodforgroup
Decontamination.

PHYSICAL DECONTAMINATION
Scrapping (with Wooden stick, knife
etc.)
Absorption (with Fuller earth, sand,
active charcoal).
Washing (with Water, soap water).
Evaporation (with Hot air steam).

PHYSICAL DECONTAMINATION
PDK-1
ThisispersonnelDecon.Kit.
Thishandy sachet Contains
20g.activatedadsorbentpowder.
Usefordecon.OfskinagainstCW
agents.
ItiseffectiveforalltypeofCW
Agents.

PDK-II
This is also personnel
decontamination kit similar to
PDK-I
The adsorbent powder(80g)
It is effective against all type
of CW agents
Used to decontamination of
clothing and equipment.

Cheapest.
Used for all type CW agent.
Easily available.
Advantages of Physical decon.

More reliable .
More effective.
Convert CW agent into innocuous
(uqdlkuu djusokyk) product.
Why to use chemical methods:
CHEMICAL DECONTAMINATION.

* Used for decontamination of equipment
and area contaminated with liquid,
blister and nerve agent.
* Within 30 min neutralize toxic agents.
Decontamination Solution(DS2)

DS-2
70%
diethylenetriamine
28%
Solvent (Ethylene glycol)
2%
sodium hydroxide
* Composition of DS2:

DS-2
Decontamination of GB and HD
takes less than
5 minutes.
Other agents take about
30 minutes
It can be used with the small
decontaminator or with the
medium-sized decontaminator .
It should be used at
temperatures over –26ºC.
DS-2
DS-2

DS-2
sprayed over agents
and washed off with
water
DS-2
Due to its low ignition point,
it should not be used near
running engines.
Fire risk when it comes in
contact with bleaching
powder.

MERITS OF DS2
Ready to use solution.
Long term storage stability.
Long operative temperature.
Damage paints and plastics.
Demerits of DS2

Personnel Decontamination Kit (PDK)
M258 AI AND M280
* The active ingredients are :
Ethanol -72%
Phenol -10%
NaOH–5%
Ammonia-0.2%
Water-12%
* This kit is effective against Nerve Agent and
can be used for decontamination the skin and
personal equipment effected by nerve agents.

Surface Types
beaches
Removing, covering,
flushing, neutralizing
Bleach.
Solvents.
Formalin.
Caustics.
Detergents.

Surface Types
hard surfaces
flushing with water,
neutralize with slurry

BIOLOGICAL
DECONTAMINATION
Enzyme from variety of organism have been derived and used to
hydrolyze Sarin
Enzyme based formulation is non aggressive to surface i.e. they
do not corrode surfaces or damaged delegates surface like
human skin.
Degradation of sulphur mustard by bacterial strain is attempted.
The enzymes that catalyse the hydrolysis of the nerve agents
are called OPA anhydrases

VARIABLE EFFECTING
DECONTAMINATION
Contamination time
Temperature
Contamination density
Decontamination medium
Nature of agent and nature of decontaminants

DECONTAMINATION
METHODS
Individual-Mopping up liquid droplets with absorbent
Washing with water/ soap/detergent
Use mild oxidizing agent such as Chloramine
Specific antidote if available
Equipments-Immediate decontamination of personal equipment and
smaller equipment is generally done with individual decontaminants.

STEPS FOR INDIVIDUAL
DECONTAMINATION
Individual gear drop
Shuffle Pit (Removal of contamination by
PDK-1 & PDK-II)
Removal of over garments
Removal of over boot and over gloves
Removal of inner garments
Respirator Mask & canister removal
Showering for decontamination
Monitoring
Reissue of clothing

AMBULATORY
DECONTAMINATION
Decontamination the patients face
Remove all gross contamination from the patients over garments
Remove outer clothing
Check patient for contamination
Decontaminate the patients skin
Proceed to the clean treatment area

EQUIPMENT
DECONTAMINATION
Immediate decontamination of personal equipment and smaller
equipment is generally done with individual decontaminants.
Methods:
i)By Swedish decontamination tent or by decontamination
container.
ii)Use of heat, steam or hot air blown against contaminated
surface.
iii)Decontamination by boiling Rubber material).

VEHICLE
DECONTAMINATION
Pre treatment.
Main treatment.
Interior decontamination .
Monitoring.

AREA CONSIDERATION DURING
DECONTAMINATION
I) Wind
II) Topography

DECONTAMINATION
ARRANGEMENTS
Trained decontamination team
Setup site for decontamination
Dressing and undressing team
Full protection gear
Hand held detection devices
Decontamination solution and devices
Communication devices
Transport

DECONTAMINATION TEAM
SHOULD
Not to go near the suspicious liquid/ object without
protective gears
Wear complete permeable suit, face mask and canister
Carry detection paper, CAM(chemical agent monitor),
AP2C, NAOH, Bleaching Powder, Charcoal Powder, soap
detergent , PDK-1 & PDK -2.
Fresh clothing should be available

SUGGESTED DECONTAMINATION
1. Tool Drop
Warm Zone
Entry for Decontamination.
PDK Scrub.
Rinse Gloves & Boot Drop.
Final Rinse.
Protective Clothing Drop.
Removal of Breathing Apparatus .
Final Bath.
Exit.
Cold Zone

PROBLEMS WITH CONTAMINANTS
INSOLUBILITY OF CWA IN WATER
FORMATION OF TOXIC PRODUCTS
AGGRESSIVE NATURE OF DECONTAMINANTS
INEFFECTIVE TO ALL WEATHER
ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS
COST

SET UP OF SITE FOR
DECONTAMINATION
Hot Zone : Mishap site/ only rescue person
allowed vehicles equipment used are
contaminated.
Warm Zone: Rescue, decontamination and medical
person. All must be in full protective
gear.
Cold Zone : Safe area, transfer of patient.
