ABOUT THE WRITER 1898 - 1980 William was born in Maine, Minnesota, USA. He got his degree in English and Economics . He began his career as a teacher but l ater , he realized that teaching could not be his career and decided to pursue a legal career. He led his career as leading Advocate of individual rights and considered to be One of the longest serving chief justice in the history of the court.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF THE STORY The author has already undergone a terrifying experience of water in the Californian beach therefore has an aversion to water.

The Main thrust of the description: The writer describes the unpleasant incident that he underwent at the YMCA swimming pool and his determination to overcome the fear of water.

HYDROPHOBIA Why? What are the causes of hydrophobia?

The causes of his fear of water 1.Douglas’s earliest experience of water at a Californian beach at the age of four . 2.The experience of almost getting drowned in the YMCA swimming pool at the age of eleven .

REASONS FOR SELECTING YMCA POOL In comparison to the Yakima river YMCA swimming pool was safer 2. It was only two or three feet deep at the shallow end 3.There were others also who could help him

INCIDENT AT YMCA SWIMMING POOL AN ELDERLY BOY THROWS HIM INTO THE DEEP END DESPITE ALL EFFORTS THE AUTHOR COULD NOT HELP HIMSELF 3. NEARLY DROWNED BUT WAS FINALLY RESCUED 4. SEIZED WITH FEAR OF WATER

The effect of his fear of water : He never went back to the pool The memories of his childhood became fresh He avoided water whenever he could Whenever he tried to get into water he was haunted by the old terror 4. Missed all enjoyments related to water such as - Canoeing, fishing trips, boating…….. WHENEVER HE WENT NEAR THE WATER HAUNTING FEAR OF WATER FOLLOWED HIM 5. FINALLY HE DECIDES TO LEARN SWIMMING.

STEPS TAKEN BY THE AUTHOR TO OVERCOME THE FEAR OF WATER Hires an instructor He practiced swimming five days a week an hour each day He worked diligently upon the instructions Continued practicing even after the instructor had finished He challenged the terror whenever he was haunted His insatiable desire to confirm his freedom from fear lead him to swim across lakes and rivers of Washington state

Message: Self determination and perseverance is the solution to most of the problems Have courage to face difficulties rather than escaping them AHEAD OF FEAR THERE IS VICTORY

Implication: Failure can come in any field It is up to us how we take it. We can either come out with charged Enthusiasm or get disappointed and give up
