Deforestation is the systematic and purposeful {removal/ clearing} of trees and vegetation from forested areas.
The world Bank estimates that about 10 million spare kilometers of forest have been lost since the beginning of the 20th century. In the past 25 years, forests shrank by more than 1 million spare kilometers – an area bigger than the size of South Africa. If deforestation continues at an alarming pace, it could lead to severe consequences for our environment and quality of life.
