Properties of Light
Learning Objectives: At the end of a 60-minute lesson, 80% of the learners must be able to : a . identify the properties of light, b. explain that light travels a very high speeds in straight lines, and c. recognize that white light can be separated into the colors of the visible spectrum using a prism.
7 basic properties of light : Light travels in straight line. Speed of light. Reflection of light. Refraction of light. Diffraction of light. Dispersion of light. Effects of materials on light.
Light travels in straight line . The reason light travels in straight lines are because it is an electromagnetic wave, and all waves travel in straight lines.
Speed of light . The exact value of the speed of light is 3x 10^8 m/s in a vacuum.
Reflection of light . Reflection is the process of bouncing back light rays when it strikes the smooth and shiny reflecting surface.
Refraction of light . Refraction is when light rays travelling in a medium are incident on a transparent surface of another medium there will be a change in direction as it travel in second medium.
Diffraction of light . D iffraction is the spreading of light or waves around obstacles.
Dispersion of light . Dispersion is the splitting of white light into seven constituent colours when passed through the prism.
Effects of materials on light. . Effects of Materials on Light can be classified into three based on how it responds to light incident on them: transparent, translucent and opaque.
Transparent It allows light to easily pass through them.
Translucent It allow light to pass through but distorts the light during the passage .
Opaque It absorb light; do not let light to pass through.
Generalization What are the properties of light? What are the colors produced when white light enters a prism? What are the three classifications on the Effects of Materials based on how it responds to light incident on them?
