INTRODUCTION The word democracy is derived from the Greek word Demos- People Kratos - Power or rule Democracy is a form of government in which the rulers are elected by the people. A dictatorship consists of rule by one person or a group of people
Democracy Democracy means to elect the leader by the people through votes. Abraham Linkon - Democracy is a government of the people, by the people and for the people.
FORMS OF DEMOCRACY Representative - involves the selection of government officials by the people being represented. Parliamentary - the party with the greatest representation in the parliament forms the government, its leader becoming prime minister or chancellor. Presidential - a system where the public elects the president through free and fair elections. Semi-presidential - the government includes both a prime minister and a president. Constitutional - the authority of the majority is limited by legal and institutional means so that the rights of individuals and minorities are respected.
Features of Democracy In a democracy the final decision making power must rest with those who elected by the people. A democracy must be based on a free and fair election where those currently in power have a fair chance of losing. In a democracy, each adult citizen must have one vote and each vote must have one value. A democratic government rules within limits sets by constitutional law and citizen’s right.
Merits of Democracy A democratic government is a better government because it is a more accountable form of government. Democracy improves the quality of decision making. In a democracy no one is a permanent winner or loser. Democracy is better than other forms of government because it allows us to correct its own mistakes.
Drawbacks of Democracy Leaders keep changing in a democracy. This leads to instability. Democracy is all about political competition and power play. There is no scope for morality. Elected leaders do not know the best interest of the people. It leads to bad decisions. Democracy leads to corruption for it is based on electoral competition.

History of democracy in Pakistan The first rule of democracy is to Elect the Leader of people’s choice through transparent elections, but in Pakistan condition is quite different. In Pakistan people elect one leader but there come another leader First Democratic Rule (1988-1990): Pakistan Peoples Party won Second Democratic Rule (1990-1993) : PML(N) Won Third Democratic Rule (1993-1996): Pakistan Peoples Party Fourth Democratic Rule (1997-1999): PML(N) Won

Dictatorship A dictatorship consists of rule by one person or a group of people. The main points of this type of Government is given below: No give interest to country benefit. No freedom of speech. Give benefits to own people. The decision making ability is in one Hand.
Periods of dictatorship in Pakistan General Ayub Khan from 1958 to 1969. General Muhammad Yahya Khan from 1969 to 1971. General Muhammad Zia- ul - Haq from 1977 to 1988. General Pervez Musharraf from 1999 to 2008.
Distinguish between Democratic and Non Democratic government Democratic Govt In democratic Gov. people elect their rulers and have right in decision making. The parliament is a separate body and has no interference of army. Non Democratic Govt People don not elect their rulers and have no right in decision making. The parliament cannot pass a law about the army chief.
