TEACHING OF PHYSICS Presented to: Ma’am maheen Presented by: Amenah gondal Class: Bs.ed (v)

Demonstration method

Objectives: We will discuss: What is demonstration method? Characteristics of demonstration method Performance of demonstration method Advantages and disadvantages of demonstration method Suggestions for demonstration method

Demo “A   demo  is what  you  give to show how something works .”

Demonstration method “Demonstration is a method of presentation of skills which shows how a particular procedure is performed .”

Cont …… the Teacher shows and explain. Students are active . It is based on the principle “truth is that which works”. It is psychological and economical method. Teacher has to work out something and then the students will believe. Most commonly used in “science and fine arts”. Can be used in giving information, training and knowledge. It is a time saving method.

characteristics Following are the characteristics of good demonstration: Visible to all students. Set up should be at good height for proper visibility. Classroom must have good lightning and ventilation. Size of the apparatus should be large enough for the students. The apparatus should have a black board to summarizing concepts and principles.

Cont ….. To avoid floundering during demonstration, the teacher must arrange the apparatus in proper order. Asking suitable reflective type questions keep the students on track. Give emphasis on the main or major points to make students aware of the objectives of the demonstration. Pace of the method must be accurate.

Cont …. The Students should be given ample time for recording the data. The teacher must be well-versed in handling the apparatus by carrying out necessary rehearsal prior to actual demonstration. The teacher should make allowances and provisions in case of any circumstances like power failure etc.

Performance Explanation Phase Demonstration Phase Performance Phase Supervision Phase evaluation Phase

1. Explanation: Explanation must be clear. objectives of the particular lesson to be presented. the instructor must convey to the students the precise actions they are to perform. instructor should describe the end result of these efforts. Before leaving , the instructor should encourage students to ask questions.

2. Demonstration: The instructor must show students the actions necessary to perform a skill. extraneous activity as possible should be included in the demonstration. to clearly understand the instructor is accurately performing the actions previously explained.

3. Performance: is related to student’s performance of the physical or mental skills. Students performance requires students to act and do. Through doing, students learn to follow correct procedures and to reach established standards. It is important that students be given an opportunity to perform skill as soon as possible after a demonstration.

4. Supervision: During performance phase, the supervision phase is also happening by the instructor. The instructor supervised the performance of the students and observed their learning and understanding of the demonstration. they were allowed to independently complete the task at least once with supervision and coaching as necessary.

5.evaluation: In this phase, the instructor judges’ student performance. the instructor discovers just how well the skill has been learned. From this measurement of student achievement, the instructor determines the effectiveness of the instruction.

Advantages Lower cost Availability of equipment Economy of time Less hazard from dangerous materials Direction of the thinking process

Cont …. Involves more sense Develop interest Easy understanding Involves students Show the use of equipment

Cont … The demonstration can open a student’s eye to a new world of understanding. The demonstration shortens the time for learning and lengthens the memory of facts and principles. If it is well planned, conducted and followed , can be useful approach in teaching. The demonstration aids in bringing about a relationship between the theory and practice.

disadvantages All content can not be covered All students cannot see All students can not participate Low thinking in fast demonstration No rehearsal

Cont ….. Useful only for skill subjects No discussion Scarcity of equipment Lack sincerity

drawbacks Major drawbacks of this method are that: this is not based on “learning by doing”. It is not child centered. leaves no scope for individual differences.

suggestions The teacher should be sincere, diligent and skilled person. Plan demonstration in great and rehearse. Teacher should herself/himself prepare the models for demonstration and encourage the learners too. Proceed with the demonstration slowly so that all the pupils may easily grasp the details.

Cont …. Whenever possible, involve, students in the information. Make sure that all the materials are nearby when the demonstration begins. verbal explanations should heightens the interest and increase learning. A teacher must have the ability to use audio-visual aids with expertise.

conclusion I concluded that Demonstration is a method of presentation of skills which shows how a particular procedure is performed. Students are active in this method. it is Most commonly used in “science and fine arts ”. It is Visible to all students. It is a low cost method. all students cannot participate in this method. It requires planning in advance .
