SATYAJIT NAYAK Technical Assistant CSIR-Central Road Research Institute, New Delhi Demonstration on iThenticate Plagiarism Software

Definition of Plagiarism Plagiarism is the unethical practice of using words or ideas ( either planned or accidental ) of another author/researcher/or your own without proper acknowledgment

All of the following are considered plagiarism Turning in someone else’s work as your own Copying words or ideas from someone else without giving proper credit Failing to put a quotation in quotation marks Giving incorrect information about the source of a quotation Changing words but coping the sentence structure of a source without giving proper credit Copying so many words or ideas from source that makes up the majority of your work ‘whether you give credit or not’

Types of Plagiarism Intentional Unintentional Copying some one’s work. Copying and pasting block of text from electronic sources. Media “borrowing” (Ex:- Using Google image) without documentation. Web publishing without permission of creators Careless paraphrasing Quoting excessively Failure to use your own “Voice” Taking work You have created elsewhere and turning it in again without changes.

What are the Different Kinds of Plagiarism? Direct Plagiarism: Copying another writer's work with no attempt to acknowledge that the material was found in an external source is considered direct plagiarism. Mosaic Plagiarism: The first is to copy the ideas from one single source. In this instance, the writer may use synonyms and change the sentence structure, but the main flow and ideas are identical to the source content.  Self-plagiarism:  is commonly described as recycling or reusing one’s own specific words from previously published texts. Accidental Plagiarism: it occurs when a person neglects to cite their sources, or misquotes their sources, or unintentionally paraphrases a source by using similar words, groups of words, and/or sentence structure without attribution

How can I avoid plagiarism Don’t copy and past from a website or retype something from a print source Don’t use or buy someone else’s paper Paraphrase and attribution Use quotes and citations

Cut and paste Teachers check papers against online databases that will reveal work copied from websites. Ex: By Google searches Teachers recognize your writing and will know if it is not yours Then What should you do instead?.....

Paraphrasing Paraphrasing is the way of rewriting something in your own words Must change words and sentence structures Must attribute information to source

Using quotes and citation You can use someone else’s work if you put them in quotation marks cite the source. Examples: According to library.com, “Plagiarism means using someone else’s work without giving them proper credit.” Universities detect plagiarism using specialized software that automatically compares submissions to a database of other texts (library.com).

Example of Citation and Quotation Original Text: What are industrial designs? If you're producing distinctive-looking new products, you'll want to register your designs. Industrial designs are product features that appeal to the eye. They can be a new shape for the hood or fenders of a car, the original pattern in a woven sweater or all of the visual features of a computer monitor. A product's visual appeal gives it a competitive edge, setting it apart from others and making it the one people will buy.

Example of a Quotation: The Government of India explains that "[ i ] ndustrial designs are product features that appeal to the eye. They can be a new shape for the hood or fenders of a car, the original pattern in a woven sweater or all of the visual features of a computer monitor. A product's visual appeal gives it a competitive edge, setting it apart from others and making it the one people will buy."

Example of a Citation (Paraphrase): The Government of India explains that industrial designs are products with unique features-products that are different in shape, pattern, or design.
