NONVERBAL VS. VERBAL Non-Verbal Communication Verbal Communication It depends on non-verbal cues like facial expressions, eye contact, body language, and so on. Verbal communication depends on written and oral forms of language. It is less structured. There is no formal training to gain excellence in the use of non-verbal means of communication. Formal training can impart competence in the use of verbal communication. It is difficult to say what non-verbal symbols mean. For example, the smile on your face may be interpreted differently by different people. Words are used with defined connotations. Non-verbal cues support and supplement the message being conveyed in words. They can reinforce the meanings we intent in our verbal messages. Sometimes words alone cannot convey the message effectively. Non-verbal communication is more spontaneous. Often when we communicate non-verbal, we do it unconsciously. It is usually thought out, less spontaneous. Non-verbal cues are supposed to be more reliable than words. Verbal cues are less reliable they may be deceiving.
