Design and Analysis of Antenna using CST Studio Suite Communication Engineering Lab (EC3091E)
Microstrip Patch Antenna Widely used antennas in modern wireless communication systems. Compact size, low profile, lightweight, and ease of fabrication. Consist of a metallic patch printed on a grounded dielectric substrate
Design of Rectangular Patch Antenna
Fringing Effect Due to the finite dimensions of the patch and substrate, electromagnetic fields extend beyond the physical boundaries of the patch, known as fringing.
Fringing Effect Since some of the waves travel in the substrate and some in air, an effective dielectric constant is introduced to account for fringing and the wave propagation in the line. The microstrip line look wider electrically compared to its physical dimensions.
Inset Feeding A simple edge-fed microstrip line can cause is impedance mismatch. The input impedance at the edge of a resonant patch is typically very high (often in the range of 150 Ω to 300 Ω), which creates a significant mismatch with standard 50 Ω RF systems, leading to poor power transfer and high signal reflection.
Inset Feeding The feed line is not connected at the absolute edge but is moved inwardtoward the center of the patch by a specific distance, y0 .
Inset Feeding The width of the feed line W0 corresponding to standard impedance 50 Ω is given by:
Antenna Configuration
Return Loss ( ) Simulated dips below -10 dB near 2.45 GHz. In practice, inset-fed patches can achieve as low as -40 dB. Also observed that antenna has a -10 dB impedance bandwidth of 60 MHz (2.42-2.48 GHz).
Realized Gain A peak realized gain of 0.9 dBi observed for the simulated rectangular microstrip patch antenna .
Radiation Pattern A Broadside radiation is observed for the simulated rectangular microstrip patch antenna .
