Fixtures are production devices used to perfectly manufacture replicate and
interchangeable parts. Fixtures are especially engineered so that large quantities of parts
can be manufactured or assembled one by one, and to ensure interchangeability of
parts. The economical production of designing parts is highly facilitated by the
availability of fixtures.
The use of a fixture makes a simple operation for one which would otherwise require a

when we see or travel by 'chhakada' we rarely realize who invented this amazing
people- friendly transport vehicle. Well, they take pride in mentioning their founder's
name – the Mr. Jagjivanbhai Karsanbhai Chandra. He was a man of vision. A Dreamer. An
Inventor. A Strategist. And a master-mind who loved challenges.
Back in the 1970's, when transportation was a great problem especially in backward
areas, he decided to start a new trail. He was thinking of an economical mode of
transportation which can benefit backward areas of Saurashtra. The road conditions
were not good but the need for transportation was increasing day by day.
After heavy research and planning, he came up with a vehicle which was skill fully
engineered from a motorcycle. And this is how the first 'chhakada' was developed which

The Thesis Report explains the Fixture Design for VMC-430 (3-Axis) machine. The report
consist basic understanding about types of Fixture design like Introduction of Fixture,
3-2-1 principle, Types of Fixtures with figures and the different approaches which are
used in the related fixture design. The main objective of the report is to design the
fixture for complex geometry.
This geometry is having different machining operation. Major operations are Face

As the Geometry of the component is very complex, ample amount of inputs are

Chapter 9: Result Analysis
We have done simulation in Solid-Works. Simulation is done on Crank-Case in order to find
maximum stresses and maximum deflection produced in it. The results of simulation have proved
that the Crank-Case will remain safe on application of ram force. The maximum stresses generated in
Crank-Case weren’t exciding the withstanding capacity of the material used in Crank-Case. The
maximum deflections were found to be negligible.
We have also done the analytical calculation. In that we found that the maximum stresses
were not exceeding the endurance limits.

From above results it validates that the result obtained in virtual simulation are correct, because the
analytical results are much similar to the Simulation results. And hence we prove that our Crank-Case
will remain safe wile fixing the bearings via our designed Fixture.
In the case of real world till now misalignment was the cause for occurrence of failure in
bearings due to manual pressing. This phenomena of misalignment was often and thus there was
need to design a fixture as its remedy. In our fixture there will be no chance of misalignment. Thus
there will be no chance of bearing failure.

Fixtures position components precisely; and hold components strongly and prevent their movement during working in
order to impart great productivity and component accuracy. Fixtures hold or grip a work piece in the
predetermined manner of tightly and locate, to perform on the work piece of a manufacturing operation.The objective of
this project or design is to press multiple bearing inside crank-case
b. Prior Art / Background of the Invention / References :
Over the past century, manufacturing has made considerable progress. New machine tools,
high-performance cutting tools, and modern manufacturing processes enable today's
industries to make parts faster and better than ever before. Although work holding methods
have also advanced gratefully, the basic principles of clamping is still the same. Mass
production methods demanded a flash and easy method of positioning work for accurate
operations on it. Fixtures are production devices used to perfectly manufacture duplicate
and interchangeable parts. Fixtures are especially engineered so that large numbers of parts
can be manufactured or assembled one by one, and to ensure interchangeability of
components. The economical production of designing components is greatly facilitated by
the availability of fixtures. The use of a fixture makes a simple operation for one which
would otherwise require a lot of skill and time. Fixtures position components precisely; and
hold components strongly and prevent their movement during working in order to impart
great productivity and component accuracy. Fixtures hold or grip a work piece in the
predetermined manner of tightly and locate, to perform on the work piece of a
manufacturing operation. A fixture is designed and built to hold, support and locate every
part to ensure that each is machined within the specified limits. The correct relationship and
positioning between the tool and the work piece is conserved. Fixtures may be big or very
small. Their use is limited only by job requirements and the thinking of the designer. The
fixtures must be precisely made and the material used mustn’t be able to wear and the
operational forces experience during metal cutting. Fixtures must be clean, undamaged and
free from chips. Fixtures are precision tools. They are expensive to produce because they
are made to fine limits from materials with good resistance to wear. They must be properly
stored or isolated to prevent accidental damage, and they must be numbered for
identification for future use.
c. Summary of the Invention/Project :
In this project we have designed a fixture for fixing multiple bearings in the crank-case at a time. For that we have
presented some important parts of the fixture along with their dimensions. For more understanding we have also made
videos and animations related to our project.
d. Objects of the Invention/Project :
The objective of this project or design is as follows:
To press multiple bearing inside crank-case
To maintain stability of crank-case while pressing the bearing
To maintain accuracy and precision while pressing bearing inside the crank-case

f. Description of the Invention :
The base plate is fixed on the press via nuts and bolts.
The resting plate is fixed temporarily on the base plate via pins.
The rods are fitted into the base plate via fasteners.
The crankcase is fitted temporarily on the base plate via dowel pins.
The distance pieces are glued on the base plate at the edges.

In this project we have designed a fixture for fixing multiple bearings in the crank-case at a time. For that we have
presented some important parts of the fixture along with their dimensions. For more understanding we have also made
videos and animations related to our project.
d. Objects of the Invention/Project :
The objective of this project or design is as follows:
To press multiple bearing inside crank-case
To maintain stability of crank-case while pressing the bearing
To maintain accuracy and precision while pressing bearing inside the crank-case

f. Description of the Invention :
The base plate is fixed on the press via nuts and bolts.
The resting plate is fixed temporarily on the base plate via pins.
The rods are fitted into the base plate via fasteners.
The crankcase is fitted temporarily on the base plate via dowel pins.
The distance pieces are glued on the base plate at the edges.

The bushes are placed on the rods after oiling them.
Oil seal is attached at the base of bush.
The upper base is attached to the bushes via press fit.
Upper Resting plate is attached to upper base via strong pins.
Pushers are attached to resting plate at exact locations marked on it.
Ram clamper is fastened on upper base in the middle portion.
Frame is pinned above the rods at the corners.

At present scenario, productivity and economics of machining work pieces in
large quantity is greatly affected by use of work holding devices like fixture. To
achieve require accuracy with reduced rework and easy handling, fixtures are
provided. This project is about designing the fixture for pressing bearing inside
the crank case. For this purpose of designing and analysing the modelling
software known as solid works is to be used. The fixture is design mainly to get
multiple bearing pressed on crank case while keeping it stable and to get the
accuracy of press within tolerance limit.
