DIFFERENTIAL GEAR
50cc Honda Gerotor differential gear chain
A differential is a device, usually but not necessarily employing gears, capable of transmitting torque and rotation through three shafts, almost always used in one of two ways. In one way, it receives one input and provides two outputs; this is found in most automobiles. In the other way, it combines two inputs to create an output that is the sum, difference, or average, of the inputs. SYNOPSIS
Wheels receive Power from Engine to wear D rive Shaft.
Functional Description: Axial Ratio of Pinion gear to Ring gear is 4:1
TYPES OF DIFFERENTIAL GEARS: Open Differential Locking Differential Limited-Slip Differential (LSD) Auto LSD
How a car differential works:
Open Differential: Input torque is applied to the ring gear (blue), which turns the entire carrier (blue), providing torque to both side gears (red and yellow), which in turn may drive the left and right wheels. If the resistance at both wheels is equal, the planet gear (green) does not rotate, and both wheels turn at the same rate.
Locking Differential: When Brake is applied, the carrying load acting on the Differential is High. So , that one more Spider Gear (Messed with two side gears) is added to LSD and it is similar to Open Differential.
Limited-Slip Differential (LSD): If the left side gear (red) encounters resistance, the planet gear (green) rotates about the left side gear, in turn applying extra rotation to the right side gear (yellow).
Traction-Aiding devices: Air Locking Differential
Cross - sectional views:
Cases : (At different speeds) N Left > N right - Turns to Right direction. N Left = N right - Straight direction along with Ring Gear. N Left < N right - Turns to Left direction. N – Speed of wheel in RPM
Merits / Demerits: In Automobile, Differential has speed reduction due to high gear ratio (power flow) . Therefore, LEMIDENT-SLIP Differentials are Introduced.
