Definitions Virology – the branch of science that deals with the study of viruses. Virus – an infective agent that typically consist of a nucleic acid molecule in a protein coat, is too small to be seen by light microscopy, and is able to multiply only within the living cells of a host.
Properties of viruses • Viruses are filterable agents. • Viruses are obligate intracellullar parasites. • Viruses cannot make energy or proteins independently of a host cell • Viral genomes may be RNA or DNA but not both • Viral components are assembled and do not replicate by division.
